Watt o-matic - An energy-consumption-monitoring device

  1. 1. THE WATT-O-MATIC Energy Consumption Monitoring Device (Please view as slide show)
  2. 2. At a glance…. Indicates status of electricity consumption in the entire house at a glimpse. Indicates usage levels in monetary terms, to compel active consumption Consumption indicator for individual appliances Custom tips to reduce electricity consumption.
  3. 3. Features  Calculates electricity expenditure (in different currencies) on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.  Appeals to a person’s conscience and financial consciousness  Prompts when an appliance is unattended via a proximity detector.  Electricity bill calculated in real time, based on average use. Calculates real time savings/wastage in terms of money and units.  Accessible on any device with web access to access an account to create, modify and maintain custom energy management profiles.  Send regular status report through SMS /E-mail to mobile or on E-mail address.
  4. 4.  Data logging feature that can be downloaded to a computer via a wired or wireless medium.  Displays real-time data and demographics related to electricity consumption in the area, city, state.  Visually and/or with voice alerts the user about energy wastage. Wireless transmitter broadcast energy usage to distant indicator.  Accommodates almost all billing structures.  Powered by alternate source of energy Features
  5. 5. Technical features • Replacement for MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit which will make PDU (Power Distribution Unit) or Fuse Box redundant. • Software which can automatically detect and configure newly connected devices, making installation easier. • Measures energy with the precision of micro Watts / KWs. • Compatible with both single phase and poly phase power supply. • Can be used to monitor individual circuits and loads.
  6. 6. T.V. in living room is ON unattended, please check to avoid wastage otherwise will be shut down automatically in 1 min. A.C. in Bedroom 3 is ON unattended, please respond to avoid wastage otherwise will be shut down automatically in 1 min. T.V. And A.C. are ON unattended, will be shut down automatically in 10 0min. T.V. A.C. 109876543210 T.V. & A.C. were shut down to save energy. How would you feel if someone turns you on and leaves?
  7. 7. Add-Ons. (Level 1 Interface) •A remote indicator that reflects the status of consumption in corresponding colors. •Pliable and can be fastened around a photo frame, doorknob, T.V., speakers, or any other surface. •Aesthetically pleasant / neutral and ideally to be placed in an area of prime visibility.

  9. 9. The Team • Snehal Choudhari • Janetri Dave • Sharon D’Costa Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai, India. About Us: We are first-year management students in a Business Design course. We created this concept as a part of our Interaction Design study based on electricity consumption in our city. As part of our primary research, we interviewed householders as well as owners of businesses to understand how receptive they would be to such technology. The results were very encouraging. Our main finding from this research was that most people are aware about the need for energy conservation, but still do not consciously practice it. We hope the device we designed would help provide that extra bit of motivation for people to conserve energy for a more sustainable future.
