Going Global Going Public FETC - Presentation Transcript

  1. Going Global, Going Public Dean Shareski FETC 2009 Orlando, FL 01.23.09 Internet safety, privacy, cyberbullying and content filtering are all huge issues for teachers and students exploring and participating in online activities. Rightly so. Too often, schools choose the most restrictive options out of fear and uncertainty. Just like any activity that involves risk, the decision has to be made to determine if the rewards out weigh the risks. Often overlooked in the desire to keep our students safe is the lost opportunity for students to understand and control their online identities. This session will explore the rewards, consider the risks and provide a perspective you may not have considered when thinking about the ever exploding digital world.
  2. Understanding Identity Dispelling Myths Managing your Identity Leveraging the Network Have you considered.......
  3. Your Digital Identity -everyone has one whether you like it or not.
  4. They may not have to unlearn but they still don’t fully understand what that might mean
  5. Are you okay with Google Managing your Identity? As wonderful as you might think Google is, they are the default managers of your your identity.

  12. Dispelling the Myths
  13. Myth #1 Filters are important tools that protect our children
  14. Tom Wood 15 year old cracked an 84 million dollar filtering system set up by the Australian govt in 20 minutes.
  15. Filters protect schools and adults not students This is my bias but also something I believe to be true
  16. Teachers are the best filters
  17. Myth # 2 Internet Predators pose a huge danger to students Shows like NBC’s to Catch a Predator aren’t doing us any favours.
  18. It’s like a plane crash. They rarely happen but when it does, it floods the media. It still deters very few from flying. Safer than your car.
  19. Of the 5% of perpetrators that were unknown to the victims, the amount related to connections via the internet is so small, that it’s statistically insignificant. This is not to say it’s not important to teach but no different that we would teach for the real world.
  20. Current Myth #3 strategies on Internet Safety and Cyberbullying are effective In the same way our best P.E. teachers are fit, active and believe what they do is important, the same with internet safety. Teachers who don’t have profiles or participate in any online activities would be hard pressed to understand the issues. It can be done, but it’s tough. I also question whether this is being taught at all in some cases. I don’t blame teachers since it’s simply added into to their already overcrowded curriculums.
  21. Myth #4 Kids are internet savvy
  22. Is this real? Would you know how to tell if it’s true?
  23. Is this real? Would you know how to tell if it’s true?

  39. What are schools doing to help students understand this? In many cases we block Facebook and other sites where students are working on their digital identities whether they know it or not. Resume and portfolio building is happening as early as first grade.
