Desert Shanti – The Village <ul><li>Youth at risk – National problem in Israel </li></ul><ul><li>330,000 youth at risk, 14,000 in danger – living on the street </li></ul><ul><li>In the South: 28,000 youth at high risk (according to the Rashi Foundation) </li></ul><ul><li>5 centers for youth at risk in Israel – not one of them in the South </li></ul><ul><li>Youth at risk – existential requirement </li></ul><ul><li>120,000 youth in the South </li></ul><ul><li>Consistent rise in violence, drug and alcohol abuse </li></ul><ul><li>Familial nucleus in crisis, dysfunctional inter-personal communication </li></ul><ul><li>The desert with its magical healing powers </li></ul><ul><li>Over 25 years experience in changing risk situations </li></ul><ul><li>Heterogenic youth groups, integrating city youth into a desert life style </li></ul><ul><li>Location </li></ul><ul><li>Route 40, a developing transportation route connecting the center with the South, South Negev Municipality, south of Ben Gurion College </li></ul><ul><li>Grounds </li></ul><ul><li>The village is spread over 540 Dunam </li></ul><ul><li>150 Dunam built </li></ul><ul><li>400 Dunam open space </li></ul>

Desert Shanti – The Village <ul><li>Vision and goals </li></ul><ul><li>Create an educational, therapeutic and rehabilitation house to accommodate youth at risk </li></ul><ul><li>Familial atmosphere with a quality of life and a connection to the desert life style </li></ul><ul><li>Connecting the desert and nature to Shanti House’s therapeutic model </li></ul><ul><li>Assisting more youth with a variety of means </li></ul><ul><li>Drug, alcohol and violence prevention center </li></ul><ul><li>Creating jobs for the Negev residents </li></ul><ul><li>Uniqueness of the program </li></ul><ul><li>Emphasis on planning and construction to provide a unique and relaxing atmosphere </li></ul><ul><li>The house will be a focal point for youth from all over Israel </li></ul><ul><li>A “green village” emphasizing the preservation of the environment, utilizing local and recycled materials, water and garbage recycling, utilizing solar and wind energy </li></ul>

Therapeutic horse back riding <ul><li>Therapeutic horse ranch will serve the youth on the professional, personal, therapeutic and social level </li></ul><ul><li>Therapeutic experience proves that therapy with animals improves and contributes to the therapy process with youth </li></ul><ul><li>Proximity to a live, sensitive and non judgmental creature enables the youth to create a human connection, which develops emotional tools for personal empowerment </li></ul><ul><li>Riding improves listening and concentration skills, as well as balance, social skills, high self esteem and more </li></ul><ul><li>Therapeutic riding as a tool for growth, a youth could become a qualified “riding instructor” and receive a professional tool for later on in life </li></ul><ul><li>Solution for youth, who require therapeutic riding in the South (Sderot, Mitzpe Ramon, Dimona, Netivot) </li></ul><ul><li>The ranch will provide riding lessons to youth from the area </li></ul><ul><li>The horse ranch will serve as a link between the village and the community </li></ul>

Desert Shanti – therapeutic ranch & experience <ul><li>Very few therapeutic ranches and long waiting lists indicate the necessity for a therapeutic ranch in the northern Negev </li></ul><ul><li>The ranch will award riding scholarships to excelling students in the South and will encourage excellence among youth </li></ul><ul><li>During summer vacation the ranch will hold subsidized summer camps for residents of the South </li></ul><ul><li>The summer camps and community activity will promote the educational connection between the village youth and the community </li></ul><ul><li>The village youth will learn about giving and receiving and acquire social and communal tools for life </li></ul><ul><li>Organized riding trips for the village youth, various distances adapted to age groups </li></ul>

Desert Shanti – Animal corner <ul><li>The learning youth at the animal corner will operate on the following levels </li></ul><ul><li>Personal nurturing </li></ul><ul><li>Lectures to visitors on different animals </li></ul><ul><li>Educational tours: zoos, other animal corners etc’ </li></ul><ul><li>Bonding activities at the animal corner </li></ul><ul><li>Animal corner maintenance </li></ul><ul><li>Study with the aid of science teachers </li></ul><ul><li>Educational and study goals of animal corner </li></ul><ul><li>Work education – personal responsibility, cleanliness and order, cooperation, work ethics </li></ul><ul><li>Nature studies – caring, grooming, nurturing and sanitation </li></ul><ul><li>Personal development – being articulate, learning to express </li></ul><ul><li>Enhancing self confidence – creates personal pride towards the environment </li></ul>
