    2. Using a search engine effectively.
      • Meta search vs. single engine - meta search uses multiple search engines - examples: Dogpile, WebCrawler
      • Directory vs. search term
      • Google specialties - Google Scholar (searches university research) - Google Books
    3.  
    4. Simple Boolean Logic.
      • AND – search engines assume this between search terms
      • OR – searches for either occurrence
      • NOT – eliminates a term from the search
      • “…” – searches for the phrase exactly as is
      • (…) – groups logic commands eg. andrew AND denton NOT (enough OR rope)
    5. Specific searching.
      • site: … - searches the targeted site only
      • filetype: … - searches only for that file type
      • Video – YouTube, Twit.tv
      • Other people’s internet research – del.icio.us, digg.com, stumbleupon.com
      • Slideshows – Slideshare.net, 280slides.com
      • Podcasts – Podcast alley, Site specific, iTunes
      • Blogs – Google blog search. Technorati.com
    6. Library Services.
      • Navigate to these individually, they’re not indexed by search engines: - MacquarieNet - Virtual Library (vlib.org) - Open Library (openlibrary.org) - GCCC library online services - University of Qld Library Cyberschool (www.library.uq.edu.au/schools) - Griffith Research Online (www.griffith.edu.au/researchonline)
    7. Forums and discussion boards.
      • Places where people freely answer questions and offer information.
      • Many websites have these integrated. - Eg. Sixty minutes, Insight
      • May need to go to a forum to search within it.
    8. Automatic Retrieval.
      • Subscribing to news, blogs, podcasts and webcasts.
      • RSS (feed)
      • Aggregator – program or site that works the RSS feeds
    9. Networking.
      • del.icio.us – social bookmarking (open)
      • diigo.com – social bookmarking (closed)
      • EDNA – education specific, groups
      • Yahoo / Google groups
      • Twitter – perpetual micro blogging
    10. Managing all this.
      • Personal portals: Netvibes iGoogle Pageflakes
