Reggaeton originated in Panama as a genre called reggae en español. It then evolved into its own style in Puerto Rico after gradually spreading there, blending genres like reggae, dancehall, bomba, plena, salsa, merengue, Latin pop, cumbia, bachata, hip hop, R&B and electronica. While its predecessor began in Panama, reggaeton was exposed and popularized more in Puerto Rico, leading to misunderstandings about its origins. Caribbean migrants helped introduce the early sounds of reggaeton to Panama while working on the Panama Canal. Popular reggaeton artists include Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Ivy Queen and Sean Paul.
