  • 2. 01 INTRODUCTION The art of percussion music is the production of sounds from the hitting, shaking,rubbing or scraping of an object, causing it to vibrate. The word ‘percussion’ comes from thelatin word ‘percussio’, which means ‘to beat’. In modern terms, the action of beating is madeeither by hand or using sticks. This year marks the first year of the Percussions Club. It has been established to coincidewith the presence of several percussion instruments more associated with marching bandensembles. However, the club is gradually building its collection of musical instruments, and bynext year, hope to be able to amass standard percussion instruments of various kinds.02 CLUB VISION AND MISSIONThe Club’s Vision is “Music being the epithet of intellect, discipline, emotion and expression”The Club’s Mission is “Nurturing musical talents through beats and rhythms” The Vision statement employed by the Percussions Club is the same as that of the MusicClub, for both clubs are heading towards the idea of music as a vessel for the betterment of astudent’s intellect, discipline, emotional quotient and the expression of one’s identity andpersonality. However, the Club will not claim that it is a suitable vessel for spiritual quotient as
  • 3. the Club believes that there are boundaries towards the learning of music. Nevertheless, Islamhas the tradition of having percussions as an acceptable form of music playing, which includesthe hadrah, tar, and dabrouk – percussion instruments that have Arabic origins. The Mission statement is the gist of the Club’s objectives. Beating an object is the basisof music education. In fact, in many government primary schools, students are now beingtaught music via basic percussion instruments such as drums and shakers. In consequence,beating in tempo is the basis of learning rhythms. Rhythms are the colours of music. Therefore,it is very fitting that the Percussions Club is offered to lower secondary students as exposure topercussions will inculcate the interest to learn music, and the basic of musical knowledge.
  • 4. 03 CLUB OBJECTIVES The list of objectives is not exhaustive as throughout the year, objectives will changeand new ones will be added. Nonetheless, to date, the list below portrays the short term andlong term objectives of the Club.03.1 SHORT TERM OBJECTIVES  To introduce students to the simplest form of music making  To train students in hand-and-tempo coordination  To teach students in making home-made percussion instruments  To train students in these areas: o Beats per minute (tempo) o Strokes (single, double, paradiddles, flams, hey moms, etc.) o Reading percussion music notes  To discipline students in the caring and maintenance of musical instruments  To relate percussion drumming with Math03.2 LONG TERM OBJECTIVES  To form a street drums unit for performances and concerts  To become the battery part of a marching band and/or orchestra  To write music arrangement and record them as songs for the SMPAPHM Music Album

COMPETITIONS The Club will organize two intraclub competitions throughout the year. Thesecompetitions are indicated in the tentative weekly activities plan. The first competition, which ison “creating the most impressive and effective home-made percussion instruments”, is to addto the collection of instruments for the Music Room. The second competition, which is on “thebest rendition of the Shambolic Samba song” is to motivate groups to be competitive andhence collectively improve on their playing skills in performing the Shambolic Samba song inthe future.
