  • Meaning
    • Poverty is deprivation of things that determine the quality of life like:
    • food
    • clothing
    • shelter
    • safe drinking water
    • opportunity to learn
    • enjoy the respect of fellow citizens
  • Numbers speak louder than words!
    • One third of deaths - some 18 million people a year or 50,000 per day - are due to poverty-related causes.
    • Every year nearly 11 million children living in poverty die before their fifth birthday.
    • There are over 100 million street children worldwide.
    • 800 million people go to bed hungry every night.
  • Effects of Poverty
    • Terrorism
    • Human Trafficking - $32 billion market
    • Child labor - 218 million children aged 5 to 17 are in
    • child labor worldwide.
    • Burglary
    • Drug abuse
    • Road Accidents - 100 million street children worldwide.
    • Floods - Bad drainage system accumulates water.
    • Diseases - AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, etc.
  • We need to act
    • BECAUSE……
  • It’s not fair… No one can choose the circumstances into which they are born.

  • What should be done?
    • “ Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
      • -Chinese Proverb
    • Stop feeding poor people instead invest for their skills development, vocational training, etc..
  • What can Governments do?
    • Stop wasteful expenditures like military.
