Meaning <ul><li>Poverty is deprivation of things that determine the quality of life like: </li></ul><ul><li>food </li></ul><ul><li>clothing </li></ul><ul><li>shelter </li></ul><ul><li>safe drinking water </li></ul><ul><li>opportunity to learn </li></ul><ul><li>enjoy the respect of fellow citizens </li></ul>

Numbers speak louder than words! <ul><li>One third of deaths - some 18 million people a year or 50,000 per day - are due to poverty-related causes. </li></ul><ul><li>Every year nearly 11 million children living in poverty die before their fifth birthday. </li></ul><ul><li>There are over 100 million street children worldwide. </li></ul><ul><li>800 million people go to bed hungry every night. </li></ul>

Effects of Poverty <ul><li>Terrorism </li></ul><ul><li>Human Trafficking - $32 billion market </li></ul><ul><li>Child labor - 218 million children aged 5 to 17 are in </li></ul><ul><li>child labor worldwide. </li></ul><ul><li>Burglary </li></ul><ul><li>Drug abuse </li></ul><ul><li>Road Accidents - 100 million street children worldwide. </li></ul><ul><li>Floods - Bad drainage system accumulates water. </li></ul><ul><li>Diseases - AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, etc. </li></ul>
