Tigers Are An Important Part of Our World Tigers are the largest true  Tiger cubs are born one to carnivore in the world. three to a litter and they Tigers live only in Asia. don’t open their eyes for a Unlike most cats, tigers few days after they are like water and are very born. good swimmers.  The largest tiger is the Tigers can jump up to 33 Siberian tiger. The smallest feet in one bound. tiger is the Sumatran tiger. Tigers in the wild live to be about 15 years old. Tigers in the zoo live to be about 21 years old.

Tigers Killed for their Body PartsOne of the main reasons for tigers beingendangered is that some people believe thatmedicine made from tiger parts is very magical.They are also killed for their fur for floor rugs orclothing.There are modern medicines that do the same, orbetter, job than traditional medicines made fromtiger parts... it is not necessary to kill tigers formedicine.
  • 4. WHY TIGER’S SHOULD BE SAVED??Not only is tiger a beautiful animal but it is also theindicator of the forests health. Saving the tigermeans we save the forestTigers occupy the pinnacle of the food chain and ahealthy tiger population is an indicator of the wellbeing of the whole forest.Tigers are on the threshold of extinction. Accordingto WWF, Tigers are amongst the ten mostendangered species in the world.
  • 5. Over the last century more than 95% of the Tigerpopulation has been wiped out & three sub-speciesare already extinct.Less than 3400 tigers remain in thewild today with around 1141 in India& their numbers are declining fast.
  • 6. Government Initiatives Project Tiger was incorporated in 1973 with nine tiger reserves covering an area of 16,339 sq.km. The Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 enables government agencies to take strict measures so as to ensure the conservation of the Bengal tigers Indian Board For Wildlife (IBWL) is responsible for carrying out the activities pertaining to Wildlife conservation with the State Governments .

AIRCEL NDTV TELETHONThe Save Our Tigers Telethon on Dec 12, 2010 was a 12-hour live televised conclave of environment experts,wildlife conservationists, political leaders, children,celebrities, industry and prominent public figures whocame together to pool donations to facilitate tigerconservation and ensure a sustainable biodiversity.A donation of Rs 4,86,68,932 has been collected and 35Rapid Response Teams arranged for the tigerprotection.

Conti..Amitabh Bachchan donated Rs 14 lakhs to the cause.Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan offered another 14 lakhsas part of their contribution.Musical performances were held across the country.Musicians like Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, Mohit Chauhan,Salim-Sulaiman and local bands like Pulp Fiction, Coshishand Band Called Nine played for the cause too.Neha Dhupia, Dia Mirza, Purab Kohli and many othercelebrities spearheaded various activities like Shikaari-ka-Shikaar and tiger- spotting at different wildlife locations.

THREATThe most significant immediate threat to theexistence of wild tiger populations is the illegaltrade in poached skins and body parts betweenIndia, Nepal and China.Other factors contributing to their loss areurbanization and revenge killing. Farmers blametigers for killing cattle and shoot them. Their skinsand body parts may however become a part of theillegal trade

  • 14. When a man wantsto murder a tiger, he calls it sport; when the tiger wants tomurder him, he calls it ferocity. Thedistinction betweencrime and justice is no greater
  • 15. What Needs to be Done to Save the Tiger?Create worldwide awareness that Tigers are anendangered species and work together to conserve.Conserve resources and do not clear up land foragriculture because it endangers the Tiger’s habitat.Ban poaching.Increase fire protection of forests.
