Ghana developed in West Africabetween the Niger (NI-jhur) andthe Gambia Rivers. It was animportant kingdom there fromabout AD300 to about 1100. Therivers helped Ghana to grow richbecause they were used totransport goods and developtrade. Ghana also collected taxesfrom traders who passed throughthe kingdom.
