  • 20. Audience
  • 21. What we know already • Films have three stages (production, distribution, exhibition) • Superhero films are often based on properties that exist in another form (TV, Comic/Graphic Novel, Film) • Film makers use Franchises and spin-offs and merchandising and sequels and advertising to make a genre film – aimed at a specific audience • A film package often contains stars and directors/producers that have worked on Superhero films already
  • 22. Audience definition • A group of people with similar tastes and or characteristics i.e. Superhero audience all like the mix of action/adventure and enjoy high concept films & some are a pre-determined audience • If we group people together (like we do with genre films) it is easier to understand them and make films that they will want to see
  • 23. Types of audience • Key demographic = the main age/gender etc of an audience. For Superhero it is often 13-24 year olds (links to the ratings i.e. 15 mostly) • Are SH films mainly targeted at males? Are there elements of the film that would attract a secondary audience i.e. girl friends or female fans?
  • 24. Fans • Fans are passionate about their genre of film • SH fans have a read a lot of comics/graphic novels and are knowledgeable about the characters and narratives • Fans will often buy into the merchandising etc • Fans are powerful and will write reviews, operate fan sites and can make or break a film financially
  • 25. Task • Chose a SH film (one you haven't really focused on before) • Define the key demographic for that film – Research!! • Who are the fans for this film? Why? What do they have to say about the film? • Are there any fan sites or reviews? • Create a poster or presentation that shows the above info (today you might just need to research)
