  2. 2. <ul><li>The Bible uses various literature to reveal God. </li></ul><ul><li>Various literature styles are used to express truth: idiomatic expressions, metaphors, satire, parables, myth, etc. Eg: raining cats & dogs, how Aristophanes satirizes Socrates in ‘The Clouds’ </li></ul><ul><li>Jesus Christ used parables to explain the Kingdom of Heaven, and reveal truth’s that are hard to explain. (Parable of the Rich man & Lazarus.) </li></ul><ul><li>Old Testament authors had to use Myth to elaborate God’s unfolding plan in the Old Testament </li></ul>

Moses sends 12 scouts into the land, one from each tribe… including Caleb of Judah & Joshua of Ephraim, reconnoiter the land of Canaan for 40 days & return. (Num 13) </li></ul><ul><li>2. Faith of Caleb: “We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so.”(Num 13:30) </li></ul><ul><li>3. People’s doubt: “We cannot attack these people, they are too strong for us.” (Num 13:31) </li></ul><ul><li>4. “…of all the men who have seen my Glory and the signs I worked in Egypt… no one shall see the land I promised…” (Num 14:22-23) </li></ul><ul><li>5.   26. 27. <ul><li>Saul becomes jealous of David (1Sam 18:8) David is hunted by Saul wrote many psalms: </li></ul><ul><li>Help me, O Lord my God; save me; according to thy mercy. And let them know that this is thy hand: and that thou, O Lord, hast done it. They will curse and thou will bless: let them that rise up against me be confounded: but thy servant shall rejoice. Let them that detract me be clothed with shame: and let them be covered with their confusion as with a double cloak.   30. 31. God’s promise to David <ul><li>“ From the day that I appointed judges over my people Israel: and I will give thee rest from all thy enemies. And the Lord foretold to you, that the Lord will make you a house. And when thy days shall be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of the bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house to my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom fore ever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son…” (2 Sam 7) </li></ul>
  31. 32. <ul><li>The Lord hath sworn truth to David, and he will not make it void: of the fruit of thy womb I will set upon thy throne. If thy children will keep my covenant, and these my testimonies which I shall teach them. Their children also for evermore shall sit upon thy throne. Solomon, son of David, asks & receives wisdom from God; “Give your servant an understanding heart to judge your people… For who is able to govern this vast people of your?” (1 Kg 3:9) </li></ul><ul><li>2. Solomon builds the Temple; (1 Kg 5:15- 7:51) </li></ul><ul><li>3. The Ark of the Covenant is placed in the Holy of Holies in the Temple (1 Kg 8:6) and the cloud filled the temple; (1 Kg 8:10) </li></ul>The Temple built by Solomon
  33. 34. <ul><li>Solomon had heavily taxed the people… & so the people asked his son Rehoboam to lighten their load… </li></ul><ul><li>Rehoboam takes bad advice and answers the people: “My little finger is thicker than the back of my father. And now my father put a heavy yoke upon you, but I will add to your yoke, my father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions.” (1 Kg 12:10-11) </li></ul><ul><li>The kingdom splits into two… </li></ul><ul><li>Northern Israel & Southern Judah. </li></ul>The Kingdom splits…
  34. 35. <ul><li>The Pre-exilic prophets, those who prophesied before the exile: (1) Jonah, Amos and Hosea, prophets of Israel. (2) Obadiah, Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Jeremiah, prophets of Judah. </li></ul><ul><li>The exilic prophets: Ezekiel and Daniel. </li></ul><ul><li>The Post-exilic prophets, prophets who prophesied after the captivity.
