  • Eccl 12:5-7 Because man goes to his lasting home, and mourners go about the streets; Before the silver cord is snapped and the golden bowl is broken, And the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the broken pulley falls into the well, And the dust returns to the earth as it once was, and the life breath returns to God who gave it. 2 Cor 5:1 For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven. 2 Cor 5:4 For while we are in this tent we groan and are weighed down, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 2 Cor 5:8 Yet we are courageous, and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. 2 Tim 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand.   • The Church, the Mystical Body, exists on this earth, and is called the Church militant, because its members struggle against the world, the flesh and the devil. The Church suffering means the souls in Purgatory. The Church triumphant is the Church in heaven. The unity and cooperation of the members of the Church on earth, in Purgatory, in Heaven is also called the Communion of Saints. When St. Paul uses the word "Saints" in opening an Epistle Ephesians 1:1, he does not mean they are morally perfect. He has in mind Hebrew qadosh , which means set aside for God, or coming under the covenant. Being such means of course they are called to moral perfection. But of course, not all have reached it in this world.
  • for "the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" (James. 5:16) Luke 15:7,10 – if the angels and saints experience joy in heaven over our repentance, then they are still connected to us and are aware of our behavior

  • 2. • as a return to dirt (Gen 3:19);• as a departure (2 Tim 4:6; Phil 1:23);• to be at home (2 Cor 5:8-9);• a discarding of a tent (2 Pet 1: 13-14);• a sleeping (Mt 9:24, Jn 11:11-13);• a rest (Rev 14:13);• a return to God (Eccl 12:7);• to be with Christ (Phil 1:23); and• to live with Christ (2 Tim 2:11).

  • 6. • Death entered into this world by sin (Romans 5:12).• So all will die, with the exception that those who are alive at the return of Christ at the end, will never die ( 1 Thess 4:13-17).• In verse 17: "Then [at His return, and after the resurrection of the dead] we the living, will be taken together with them [the risen dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord" (Cf. 1 Cor 15:51).
  • 7. Jesus’ own death “has transformed the curse of death into a blessing” (CCC 1009; Rom.5:19-20). He conquered death and opened the possibility of salvation for all (CCC 1019);

An end to the earthly life.To a Christian, death has a positivemeaning:• “For me, to live is Christ,and to die is gain.” (Phil 1:21).• Through Baptism, we die withChrist, Sacramentally, in orderto live a new life.•If we die in Christ’s grace,physical death completes this“dying”, - incorporating useternally with him;
  • 9. Christians experience a desirefor death:•“My desire is to depart and bewith Christ” (Phil 1:23);•“I want to see God, and inorder to see him I must die” (St. Teresa of Avila);•“I am not dying, I am enteringlife” (St. Therese of Lisieux).

  • 13. • Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the blessedness of heaven- through a purification594 or immediately,595 -- or immediate and everlasting damnation - CCC 1021
  • 14. Heaven is Fullness of Communion with God
  • 15. Purgatory is defined as a state of being, the continuing process of purgation or purification of the soul after human death. For those who when they die are guilty of less serious sin [venial sin], where they will undergo purification. Purgatory is a sign of Gods mercyon those who have honestly sought to know God and to do His will inthis life and yet die in some degree of bondage to sin or the effects of sin.
  • 16. “For our God is a consuming fire.” Heb 12:39 “….the builder will besaved, but only as through fire.” 1 Cor 3:15 “The genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that isperishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise,glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Pet 1:7
  • 17. • 2 Maccabees 12:42-46 – Pray for the dead• Baruch 3:4 - Baruch asks the Lord to hear the prayers of the dead of Israel. Prayers for the dead are unnecessary in heaven and unnecessary in hell. These dead are in purgatory
  • 18. • “Pursue peace with everyone and the holiness, without which no one will see the Lord” Heb 12:14• “But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Rev 21:27
  • 19. • CCC 1030 - All who die in Gods grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven
  • 20. • CCC 1032 - This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin." From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:

  • 23. Hell is the State of Those who Reject God and a state of eternal damnation
  • 24. “These will suffer the punishment ofeternal destruction, separated fromthe eternal presence of the Lord andfrom his might.” 2 Thess 1:9 29
  • 25. CCC 1035 - The teaching of the Church affirms the existenceof hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls ofthose who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell,where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire.“The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God,in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness forwhich he was created and for which he longs.CCC 1037 - God predestines no one to go to hell; for this, awilful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary, andpersistence in it until the end. In the Eucharistic liturgy andin the daily prayers of her faithful, the Church implores themercy of God, who does not want "any to perish, but all tocome to repentance"

  • 33. • Since we know what Christ’s body was like we can determine some of the qualities of our resurrected body; • “appeared suddenly then dissappeared.” • “passed through walls.” • His body seem to be the same as it was before death; but it was different; • He even changed his appearance so that his disciples couldn’t recognise Him . Luke 24 40
  • 34. • Traditionally, Theologians have described these resurrected bodies as having the characterics of ; • Identity; • Entirety; ( body with a dominant soul); • Immortality . (eternal)• These characteristics will also be present in bodies of souls condemned in hell.• Those condemned in Hell will have conditions necessary for suffering the eternal punishment of hell, but not the glorification of the Lord shared by those in Heaven. 41
  • 35. • Traditionally, Theologians have described these glorified and perfected bodies as having four “transcentdent qualities”; • Impassibility; ( freedom from physical evil, death, sickness and pain) • Clarity; ( freedom from defects and endowment with beauty and radiance); • Agility ; ( where the soul moves the body and there is freedom of motion) • Subtility; (body is completely spiritualised under the dominion of the soul) 42
