  • 2. LG DesignLab
    The laboratory is intended provide students with a means of obtaining hands-on, state-of-the-art, design experience as relevant to the industry and reinforcing learned concepts.
    To achieve this end, software such as Power Word (for electrical power network simulation), Wolfram Mathematica (for numerical and symbolic analysis), Microsoft Visual Studio (for general purpose programming with the .NET framework) and others are installed in the lab.
  • 3. Job Description
    My primary assignment at the LG DesignLab was that of a System/Network Administrator
    I gained experience as I was involved in setting up the network infrastructure needed to run a lab of this class
    I was the technical contact to companies like Autodesk, Microsoft, Siemens PLM and Wolfram Research
    I was also involved in obtaining personal licenses for staff and students for design software of their choice

  • 5. Challenges
    I worked with Microsoft Tech Support to remotely troubleshoot problems with their software
    I introduced a new method of OS deployment that reduced deployment time from about a week to two hours
    I had to set up a Failover cluster creating redundancy and increasing availability of the Domain Controllers
    I introduced software to remotely log on to the Fedora Linux gateway and administer it

    {Past Courses}
    I worked on a group of Mathematica projects on ray tracing relating to optics I learned in PHS 101 (Introductory Physics 2), SSG 205 (Engineering Computing ), SSG 314 (Algorithms and Data Structures)
    I also worked on a project to aid the Post-Graduate students’ understanding of covariant and contravariant base vectors using Mathematica. This is related to the simulation of continuous event systems learnt in SSG 409 (Systems Simulation 1)

    {Past Courses}
    I used to vector equation of a line extensively in the Mathematica projects for visualization. I had to draw on knowledge gained in GEG 103 (Engineering Applied Mathematics 1)
    I also used concepts about the dimensionality of a vector space in choosing basis vectors to represent other vectors in a given space from GEG 201 (Engineering Mathematics 1)

    {Future Courses}
    I learnt that the optimal configuration for a split-scope two-server DHCP configuration is 80/20. I plan to try to verify this using knowledge gained in SSG 507 (Systems Simulation II) which is about multiple server systems
    My work the covariant and contravariant base vectors in elementary tensor analysis is relevant to SSG 516 (Mechanics of the Continua) and I intend to discover the theoretical basis for the project I worked on

    {Future Courses}
    The DHCP service uses a protocol that has been standardized. computer standards are usually set using RFCs. This is an example of Technical Communication which I will properly learn in GEG401 this semester
    I set up a Failover Cluster to increase domain-wide availability of resources and network reliability. I am going to learn more about reliability and how to set up reliable systems in SSG 509 (Systems Reliability)

    The video that follows is a demonstration of how a glass prism bends and scatters white light into its seven constituent colors.
    The angle and shape of the prism can be varied as well as the refractive index of the glass itself. This means that a large combination of various parameters can be done in real time, a feat which is nearly if not totally impossible in conventional physics laboratories.

  • 12. Conclusion
    I think the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a good thing as it allows students to gain experience and exposure
    I have gained a number of professional skills relevant to the engineering profession
