Transcript of "Perspectives On Christmas"

 1. 1. PERSPECTIVES
 2. 2.

A point of view

The art of drawing on a plane surface true resemblances or pictures of objects, as the objects appear to the eye from any distance and situation, real and imaginary

Aerial perspective, the art of giving due diminution to the strength of light, shade and colours of objects, according to their distances and the quantity of light falling on them, and to the medium through which they are seen

Websters Dictionary

PERSPECTIVE
 3. 3.

To present a different point of view on passages, stories and people of Scripture

To present a view of Scripture that is not only for the here and now, what is close to us, but also what is for later times

To present an aerial view of Scripture that helps to paint the big picture

PERSPECTIVES
 4. 4. CHRISTMAS

We do not know the year Jesus was born, let alone the day

What we celebrate today as Christmas is a lot of hand me downs from all sorts of pagan religious practices

If you want to celebrate Christmas, that is up to you, this is not about telling you what's wrong with it or not to celebrate

 5. 5. CHRISTMAS

Colossians 2:16-17

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

 6. 6. CHRISTMAS

Romans 14:5-6

One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.

 7. 7. PERSPECTIVES ON CHRISTMAS
 8. 8.

Luke 2:1-3

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

CHRISTMAS
 9. 9. CHRISTMAS

CAESAR AUGUSTUS

First ever Roman emperor who was deified while still alive – a god/man

The census assigned a number to everyone's head under his rule in order to gain complete control over the known world

Made a false peace with Israel – Pax Romana

 10. 10.

Matthew 2:1-6

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

CHRISTMAS
 11. 11.

Matthew 2:1-6

When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.’”

CHRISTMAS
 12. 12. CHRISTMAS

HEROD THE GREAT

Called Herod the Great not because he was a great man, but because he was a prolific builder

Collaborated with the Romans against his own people

Was an Edomite, a gentile, and only converted to Judaism out of convenience

Tried to kill Jesus, but killed other innocent babies instead

 13. 13. CHRISTMAS

ALL JERUSALEM

“ he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him ” (v3)

- The political and religious establishments did not want the Messiah to come

The religious establishment knew the prophecies, but ignored them

 14. 14. CHRISTMAS

ALL JERUSALEM

Pharisees – outwardly zealous, but dead inside

Sadducees – the liberals who denied the supernatural realm

Zealots – brought their politics to church. Liberation theologians (left wing)

Herodians – also brought politics to church. Supported the enemy, Rome (right wing)

Essenes – cultists who followed false doctrine

 15. 15.

Luke 2:6-7

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

CHRISTMAS
 16. 16. CHRISTMAS

THE “INN KEEPER”

Not officially a character, but will help to illustrate the point

Turned the family away because there was no room

 17. 17. CHRISTMAS THESE PEOPLE DID NOT WANT THE MESSIAH TO COME! THEY WERE NOT READY FOR HIS COMING! CAESAR AUGUSTUS HEROD THE GREAT ALL JERUSALEM THE “INN KEEPER”
 18. 18. CHRISTMAS

WHO DID WANT

JESUS TO COME?

 19. 19.

Matthew 2:11

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

CHRISTMAS
 20. 20. CHRISTMAS

THE MAGI

The Magi knew by the signs in the sky that the Messiah was coming

Notice it was the Gentiles, Medes, who understood the signs and were more ready for the Jewish Messiah

They prepared themselves and went with an attitude of worship to find Jesus and present Him with gifts

 21. 21.

Luke 1:5-7

In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years.

CHRISTMAS
 22. 22. CHRISTMAS

ZECHARIAH & ELIZABETH

Judaism of the time was full of corruption, money and power

The Torah itself was being corrupted

- not necessarily the written Torah, but certainly that which was taught

Except for a faithful remnant who were remaining true to the Lord

 23. 23.

Luke 1:26-28

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.”

CHRISTMAS
 24. 24. CHRISTMAS

MIRIAM (MARY)

Miriam was in Nazareth on the northern ridge of the Valley of Jezreel opposite Mt Tabor

Song of Deborah

- “Most blessed of women be Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women.” (Judges 5:24)

Miriam would have been familiar with this passage

 25. 25. CHRISTMAS

MIRIAM (MARY)

How does Miriam respond?

- “And Mary said: 'My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour'” (Luke 1:46-47)

Miriam acknowledged that she too needed a Saviour

Later in Luke 2:24 we see Miriam offering a sin offering in the temple

 26. 26. CHRISTMAS

MIRIAM (MARY)

If Miriam needed a Saviour – the very mother of Jesus – then how much do we need a Saviour?

Miriam is an example of the Beatitude – “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3)

 27. 27.

Matthew 1:18-21

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

CHRISTMAS
 28. 28.

Matthew 1:18-21

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

CHRISTMAS
 29. 29. CHRISTMAS

JOSEPH

Joseph was a righteous man

Joseph was obedient

- “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife” (Matthew 1:24)

 30. 30. CHRISTMAS

JOSEPH

“ Son of ” in the Hebrew understanding does not only indicate heritage, but also character

Jesus was the son (heritage and character) of Joseph

This was all part of God's plan from the beginning

 31. 31. CHRISTMAS

Joseph's cloak was torn off him

Betrayed by his brother Judah ( yehûdâh ) for money

Imprisoned with 2 others – 1 lived, 1 died

Jesus' cloak was torn off at the crucifixion

Betrayed by Judas His disciple for money (Greek for yehûdâh )

Crucified with 2 others – 1 lived, 1 died (spiritually)

haMâshîyach ben Josef
 32. 32. CHRISTMAS

Joseph's brothers did not recognise him on their first visit to Egypt

Recognised by his brothers on their second visit to Egypt

Went from condemnation to glorification in 1 day

Jews did not recognise Messiah at His 1st coming

Jews will recognise Him at His 2 nd coming (Zechariah 12:10)

Went from condemnation to glorification in 1 day

haMâshîyach ben Josef
 33. 33. CHRISTMAS

JOSEPH

Jesus was the son of Joseph

- New Testament: by heritage

- Old Testament: in character

 34. 34.

Luke 2:8-10

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”

CHRISTMAS
 35. 35. CHRISTMAS

THE SHEPHERDS

It was dark until the angels came in the glory of the Lord and announced Jesus' birth

Greek for Shepherd is poimēn , the same word used for pastor

They were faithfully watching their flocks

Heard the angels and went to see what they were talking about

 36. 36.

Luke 2:25-27

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required

CHRISTMAS
 37. 37. CHRISTMAS

SIMEON

All Jerusalem did not want the Messiah to come, but Simeon was waiting for Him and really wanted Him to come

He was in a relationship with God and fully living for Him

The only thing that kept him going in life was the hope of the coming Messiah

 38. 38. CHRISTMAS

SIMEON

When he was presented with Jesus, he prophesied

This prophecy included the future of the whole Jewish nation and the gentiles (vv29-35)

He was part of the remnant

 39. 39.

Luke 2:36-38

There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

CHRISTMAS
 40. 40. CHRISTMAS

ANNA

Here is another person who was part of the remnant waiting for the Messiah

It seems as though she was genuinely looking for the redeemer to come

Life was devoted to prayer and fasting, working behind the scenes in the temple
