Words like hull, galley, keel etc. can be confusing. This boating article will familiarize you with the basic parts of a boat or yacht.

    • BASIC PARTS OF A BOAT OR YACHT
      • Hull: B ody of the boat made of fiberglass, though some older models may use wood or plastic. In case of cruiser boats hulls may be made of aluminum or Ferro cement steel.
      • Bow: Outer ring of the hull which is mostly pointy. In some cases it may resemble a square.
      • Gunwale/Gunnel : The outer edge of the hull

      • Stem : The pointy front end of the bow.
      • Stern : Back end of the bow.
      • Stern quarters : The back end corners of the bow are called stern quarters.
      • Rudder : Device used to steer the boat.
      • Tiller : A stick-like extension to the Rudder.

      • Rig : Any extensions rising from the hull which generally has the mast, boom and sails fastened onto them.
      • Keel/Centerboard/Daggerboard : A keel is present underneath the boat, on the hull’s bottom. A board-like foil balancing and aligning the boat when in water. In case of smaller boats, the keel is removable, which is said to be a centerboard or a daggerboard.
      • Starboard and Port : The right and left sides of the boat respectively.

      • Propeller : The device that rotates and thus powers the boat to move forward and backward, in case of power boats.
