    Hospital Information System (HIS)
    “It is an integrated information system designed to manage the Administrative, Financialand Clinicalaspects of a hospital.”
  • 4. Patient - a key factor in HIS
    Patient is key factor in HIS
  • 5. What are its modules
    The modules of HIS can be classified into various categories. The primary category are as follows:
    Back office:
    In this category, patient is indirectly involved with the system.
    Front office:
    In this category, patient is directly involved with the system.
  • 6. Patient Registration
    • Patient demographics are captured in this module of HIS
    • 7. At the time of patient registration, the system generates a unique MRN (Medical Registration Number)
    • 8. Subsequently appointments can be generated / scheduled using MRN
  • Appointment Scheduling
    • Any appointment with the physician is scheduled via this module
  • Admission Discharge Transfer (ADT)
  • 9. Admission Discharge Transfer(ADT)
    • Admission: Patient admission details like purpose of admission, date of admission, admission department are captured.
    • 10. Transfer: It describes the patient’s transfer to some other ward.
    • 11. Discharge: Once patient leaves the hospital, the discharge details are captured and maintained in the system.
    • 12. All ADT module plays significant role in patient billing
  • Wards Management Module
    • When patient is admitted bed allocation is done using this module
    • 13. It helps in allocating the bed to the patient to a particular department considering patient preferences.
    • 14. It also mention the facilities about the wards. E.g. General ward, Semi-deluxe, Deluxe.
  • Doctors Workbench (CPOE: Computerised Physician Order Entry.)
    • It is a system provided to the physicians, practitioners or care providers to place various orders for a patient
    • 15. The system transmits these orders directly to the intended department or individuals so that these orders can be executed

  • Roster Management
    • This module helps in scheduling working hours of the nursing staff, who need to work round-the-clock.
    • 24. It maintains shift rotation of nurses; analyse their workload and skills . Also helps scheduling staff training
  • Pharmacy
    • Pharmacy is the place where the requested drugs get dispensed. Both outpatients and inpatients are dispensed drugs from the pharmacy.
    • 25. OTC (over the counter) transaction is also done at the pharmacy.
  • Laboratory Information System
    • Inventory and billing of lab test

  • Radiology Information System
    • Objective: To store all patient images, scans and ECG graphs on the system

  • Central Sterilized Supply Department
    • In this department, all measures related to sterilization of hospital material is taken care
    • 29. Mostly formalin, spirit, chemical solution and sterilizer (equipment) has been used to prevent hospital material from the external infection.
  • Blood Bank
    • Donor registration
    • 30. In addition to that it will generate automated reports keeping track of inventory for stock of bloods of different blood groups and their expiry.
  • Operation Theatre
    • This module handles all functions of Operation Theatre like setting up, booking and confirming appointments, scheduling investigations and maintenance of address bank
    • 31. Multiple OT and resource scheduling and booking

  • Dietary
    • This department keep tracks of available food and its expenses.
    • 36. In addition to that, this department strives to meet the therapeutic nutritional needs of the patient by complying with physician’s orders.
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
    • It is the heart of the HIS.
    • 37. EMR contains the data only related to the patient.
    • 38. EMR is integrated with the LIS, RIS, and other modules of the HIS.
  • Patient Billing
    • This module takes care of generating patient billing details from different modules of HIS like LIS, RIS, EMR, ADT and so on.
    • 39. It can be generated on daily/weekly basis or at the time of discharge.
  • Insurance and Contracts Management
    • It shares the diagnosis and the procedural code with the insurance organization or reimbursement
    • 40. Mostly used codes are ICD and CPT

    SNOMED : (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine)
    SNOMED code is used to describe clinical information regarding diseases, pathology, specimen which is more effective than ICD codes, which only contain disease specific information.
    HIPAA: (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act )
    HIPAA regulations were designed to:
    protect individuals’ rights to privacy and confidentiality,
    assure the security of electronic transfer of personal information
