  1. 1. CA’s Battle 2011<br />
  2. 2. My mom, Arlene C. Nardiello<br />In 1988, my mom died at age 56 from breast cancer. I was 23 years old. She was an amazing middle school Reading teacher, dancer, wife, mother, friend.<br />
  3. 3. My sister, Arlene <br />In August 2010, my only sister was diagnosed with LCIS (Lobular Carcinoma In-Situ) and chose to have a preventative bi-lateral mastectomy. She is 47 years old.<br />
  4. 4. On December 31, 2010, my only aunt, Aunt Gerry, died from breast cancer. She was 79.<br />
  5. 5. In December 2010 I was diagnosed with breast cancer (DCIS -Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ and Invasive Ductal Carcinoma). I had a bilateral mastectomy in February 2011 and 2 months later, began 6 brutal rounds of chemotherapy.<br />
  6. 6. Round 1: <br />Every Fighter needs a trainer to finish the fight.<br />Rocky had Mickey. I had Maureen.<br />

  11. 11. I told all my students I was going on a trip to search for the Tasmanian Tiger. They bought it. The Tasmanian Tiger is completely extinct.<br />
  12. 12. Meet my new pal, Ivy (IV). She made my blood boil. Packs a good punch but had nothing on this Italian broad from Jersey!<br />
  13. 13. It ain't about how hard you can hit; it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. <br />I'm hot on this tiger's trail... I'm so going to win this battle.<br />
  14. 14. Ivy (IV) was my enemy, I took her for 4 rounds but she got to me for 2 of them. She’s an evil, nasty b#*@h!<br />

Initially, I was very fearful and without much hope, but as I sat there and absorbed the full extent of my illness, I refused to let the fear completely blot out my optimism. Something told me that fear should never fully rule the heart, and I decided not to be afraid.” Lance Armstrong<br />
  16. 16. I threw out the first pitch for NSU’s Strike Out Cancer event, which raised $ to fight Breast Cancer. I threw a perfect strike. <br />I had to! <br />My dad would never forgive me if I didn’t.<br />

  18. 18. I think they just came for the massages…<br />and the chemo-tini’s!<br />
  19. 19. The support I received from friends, family, former and current students was overwhelming and wonderful!<br />
  20. 20. Life is not about avoiding the storms, but learning to dance in the rain. Keep dancing inspire us all.Fight for your children, your family, and all of the lives you have touched throughout the years. Every single one of your former students is in your corner. You've got this!! <br />Have I ever told you that I love you and that you inspire me to never give up and to fight through any obstacles that may come in my way! Because of you I will succeed in life.   26. 26. “Dear Cancer…You Messed With the Wrong Mom.” <br />Cade and I are writing a book. In it, he asks the questions and I respond with honest answers. He always wanted to be an author. We are hoping to get it published.<br />
  27. 27. 1 in 7 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime<br />1 person is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes in the U.S.<br />Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer & leading cause of death in women.<br />
  28. 28. About 1.4 million women globally are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.<br />Men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer.<br />Somewhere in the world, a woman dies of breast cancer every 69 seconds.<br />
  29. 29. Fight for a cure now so no one else has to fight IVY!<br />Together we can make a difference.<br />
