• Publications include Tech-i and EBU Technical Review
tech.ebu.ch/tech-i tech.ebu.ch/publications
• Media Technology Pulse
https://www.ebu.ch/publications/media-technology-pulse
• Flagship Conferences, Workshops, Webinars

• Represents EBU Members views in standards
organisations, e.g. SMPTE, VSF, DVB, WorldDMB, HbbTV
• Administers some of these: DVB, HbbTV, DigiTAG,
WorldDMB
• “Strategic Programs” which produce reports,
recommendations, events and proofs-of-concept
• Overseen by Technical Committee, with 13 elected members

TREND ANALYSIS
• The broadcast chain becomes a public services media web
• New production tools needed because of required new workflows:
internet publish first, new playout (IT), new distribution (platforms)
• transition from traditional lineair business to new all-digital IT&IP-based business
• the old law: crap in = crap out
7. Technology Update EBU 7-9-17 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
VIEW ON MEDIA DISTRIBUTION
EBU Members: content and services universally available.
Make use of all available distribution options that meet technical, commercial and regulatory
requirements.
• Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) important until 2030
• PSM distributed over both broadcast and broadband networks
terrestrial networks ++: large-scale delivery of linear services, security, the costs for PSM
providers and end-users, and coverage.
• DTT needs dedicated broadcasting spectrum. UHF sub-700MHz
Development of mobile broadband services OK as other spectrum is already available.
• EBU supports development and standardisation activities, in particular in DVB and 3GPP.
+ development of regulatory frameworks and sustainable business arrangements for all
distribution technologies

IP OFFERS THREE KEY ADVANTAGES
Digital Transformation
More Content…
...Less Resources
Flexibility
ShareabilityScalability
18. Technology Update EBU 7-9-17 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
FLEXIBILITY Flexibility
ShareabilityScalability
• IP is agnostic to the content being
transported
• Adopt new formats and use
multiple content formats
(HD- HDR, UHD-HDR and HFR,
VR, AR, …)
• Use resources at the right time
19. Technology Update EBU 7-9-17 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
transistors per inch2 double every year
SCALABILITY Flexibility
ShareabilityScalability
• Internet Technology develops quickly
• Open systems reduce the risk that
investments are prematurely obsolete
• Scaling means that systems can grow
with increased demand, new
workflows, new applications, content
formats and available budgets
20. Technology Update EBU 7-9-17 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
transistors per inch2 double every year
SHAREABILITY Flexibility
ShareabilityScalability
• Share any content with any editorial
team when needed, any place, any time
• Low or high cost production – smarter
production
• Allow easy adaptation to any playout
platform (Online, Linear, Mobile)

SMPTE ST 2110 (under development)
• Professional Media over Managed IP Networks:
– 10 System Timing and Definitions*
– 20 Uncompressed Active Video*
– 21 Timing Model for Uncompressed Active Video**
– 30 PCM Digital Audio*
– 31 AES3 Transparent Transport
– 40 Ancillary Data
– 50 Interoperation of ST 2022-6 streams
24. Technology Update EBU 7-9-17 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
Under the hood
• SMPTE 2110 is based on multicast
• IP/UDP is best effort
• The system should not drop any packet,
therefor:
– Sender : should be polite
– Network : don’t oversubscribe
– Receiver : enough buffer size
25. Technology Update EBU 7-9-17 E.M. Verharen (NPO)
Forward looking
• SMPTE 2110
– High drive to get the standard out.
– Will be adopted as many broadcasters need a
solution.
• Meanwhile
– Experiments with HTTP(s) based high quality video
– Investigating the application on SMPTE 2110 in
software centric use cases

Discovery and Registration
AMWA IS04
• The NMOS Discovery and Registration API
• provides:
– connected devices to become listed on a shared registry
– a uniform way to query the registry
– connection management capabilities
• Describes:
– a method for peer-to-peer discovery in order to permit
operation on a link-local only or smaller network
deployment.
