- This is our 50th year and we’ve been celebrating all that we’ve achieved since we were first handed our Royal Charter in 1967. Our roots though can be traced back to the 1800’s with the formation of the Pendleton Mechanics Institute in 1850 and the Salford Working Men's College in 1858. Following a number of mergers and name changes, we officially became a University in 1967 with Prince Philip as our first Chancellor. I’m going to show you a short video that showcases some of the highlights of our past and the direction of our future.
- Salford is a city undergoing a significant amount of change and development through a significant amount of investment. Right next door £1.6 million is being invested in Peel Park (the oldest municipal park in Britain) with work due to be completed in August 2017 Media City due to double in size in the coming years - £1billion of expansion has been approved by Salford City Council at Media City Major firms moving in to the area creating fantastic job opportunities and helping the NW retain and develop talent. Freshfields – Magic Circle Law Firm, Talk Talk (1st FTSE to head quarter outside of London) and the Home Office all moving in. And it’s not just the big firms, SALFORD has emerged as one of the best places to start a new business in the UK. - Between January and March this year, 1,393 new companies launched in the city, up 85 per cent compared to the same period last year.

- Manchester is an incredibly welcoming and accessible city – a major international airport, three train stations, the Metrolink tram network and a national bus interchange. And as for activities, from cup cakes to craft beers, waterways to the Warehouse Project this area has something for everyone. There’s world class sports venues and events, the annual Pride Parade, outdoor cinema festival and not to forget the fantastic nightlife of bars, clubs, theatres and more. Whatever you’re in to Manchester has something to offer you – and your friends and family.
- Opened in September 2016 and with a formal launch happening later this year, New Adelphi is our newest teaching facility.
- Our facilities are designed to re-create real world environments. Simulation Suites – Opened in march 2016 the suite replicates a real hospital environment with an adult and childrens ward, treatment room, nurses station, labour room etc. Vast range of human patient simulators including two portable wireless adults, a newborn and infant a child and a birthing mum. The simulators can simulate breathing, blinking, bleeding and sweating and also have chest, heart and bowel sounds. These are used for simulating scenarios to help our students learn on-site. Human Performance Lab – Purpose built state-of-the-art teaching and research facility containing an extensive range of biomechanical and physiological equipment including a 30 metre running track to test speed and agility and 3D motion capture for gait analysis Podiatry and Sports Rehab Clinics – Under staff supervision our students provide a wide range of treatments, gaining valuable experience on-site experience Digital Imaging Suite – Used to support teaching of radiographic skills, we have recently invested in a new CT scanner and 2 new x-ray rooms. You’ll also have access to digital mammography viewers, mobile fluoroscopy and a suite of dedicated ultrasound units. Prosthetics and Orthotics Lab – Taught hands-on clinical practice while dealing with patients in our custom designed clinic rooms. We also have workshops with CADCAM facilities and a plaster room for taking impressions of patients anatomy ready for manufacture of prostheses or orthoses. Bodmer Lab Known colloquially as the ‘Megalab, it’s a £3m STATE-OF-THE-ART Environment and Life Sciences laboratory named after geneticist Sir Walter Bodmer, one of the proposers of the Human Genome Project in the 1980s, and former research director of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. It officially opened, February 24, 2016. (The Human Genome Project – which mapped some 3 billion pairs of genes which make up our DNA – is considered the most significant advance in the biosciences in a century.) Anechoic Chamber The anechoic chamber is immensely quiet which makes it ideal for testing very quiet products or people hearing very quiet sounds. It’s ideal for testing the response of loudspeakers or microphones because the room doesn’t affect the measurements. Robotics Labs We have a number of industrial robot arms including the ABB Flexpicker, a six jointed Nachi arm and a human scale CRS robot. The labs also contain a number of conveyor belt systems allowing students to gain experience of programming and operating systems they are likely to come across in industry. Aerodynamics labs Used to determine the aerodynamic properties of Aerofoils ( that’s wings, fins, and tailplanes !) to show the influence on the lift and drag characteristics of a tapered wing section. They have low speed and supersonic wind tunnels and a DC10 jet engine! The Octave It’s a world-class, fully configurable, immersive holographic experience which engages sight, sound, and touch that can bring together people and objects from around the world in one single virtual reality. Specialist computer and networking laboratories Computer suites are equipped with Macs and PCs configured with the specialist software required for modules such as Database Systems, Web Content Creation, Mobile Networking & Network Simulation, and Internet Security & Computer Forensics. Cisco-related laboratory classes on the programmes delivered at MediaCityUK The Energy House This is a full sized two bedroom terraced house built inside an environmental chamber that can replicate almost any weather conditions. This amazing test facility is fully furnished and packed with a vast array of sensors that can monitor a wide range of variables throughout the house and chamber
- There are two fully functioning state of art TV studios, possibly the highest specification education studios in Europe; These are equivalent to those used by industry including BBC, ITV and Sky. Features include: Full 1080 HD cameras and video systems with 5.1 surround sound mixing 3D sets and Green Screen systems Selection of world class audio and visual systems We have three state of the art radio studios that can actually create broadcast material. The studios can be linked together and the whole system uses uncompressed audio throughout for maximum quality. Our dedicated Journalism centre consists of TV studio, gallery, radio studio and dedicated teaching facilities including our AVID sponsored News Room.

- We’re really proud of our links with industry and the activities that our students get involved in. We help you gain the skills you need to get work ready through work placements and industry enagement. This year saw Inzay Rashid go on tour in Dubai with Lancashire County Cricket Club and fashion design student Val Kristopher Galbo is one of just two designers from around the world to been chosen by the judges of the Levi’s X Arts Thread Design contest, beating off competition from nearly 500 fashion students from 84 design schools across the world. He’ll now be spending the summer on a 10 week internship at Levi’s California headquarters Other images: Manchester Storm partnership – players studying to gain their MBA at Salford while the club provides placement opportunities for students of a range of disciplines Students working at Edinburgh Television Festival – this organisation offers a prestigious training course on which four of our students won a place this year, the most from any institution Partnership with Manchester Science Festival – we are the lead sponsor for the festival which encourages people from all backgrounds to get involved with science.
