is taught or learned?
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to
you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you
are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you--
unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first
importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in
accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was

Christian message?
• These passages don’t go into great detail,
but it is clear there is a basic content

• In our world there are many “gods” so which
one are we speaking of (1 Cor 8:5)?
• The true God made everything: heaven and
earth
• He is all-powerful

• God and the world (and humanity) are in a Creator-
creature relationship
• God rules over us and the world, thus there is no
room for self-government or independence from God

• The breaking of individual rules, or a symptom of a
deeper problem—rebellion against our Creator?
• Consider how God as Creator owns all things and
therefore is the Lord of all things
• Thus God is owed all glory, honor and power (Rev
4:11)
• The essence of sin is the refusal to give God what we
owe him
• Our rejection of and rebellion against our good
Creator are expressed in individual acts of sin

16. Judgment (point 3)
• With this understanding of creation and sin, judgment
is inevitable
• God rightly punishes us because we reject him
• Our sin makes us guilty because
• We have defied his ownership of (and his rule over) us
• We have chosen other gods of our own making
• We have done violence against his character and creation
• Since God cannot let this destructive rebellion
continue, his judgment ensures it won’t go on forever
