JOHN WYCLIFFE (1328-1384) • A SCHOLAR AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY IN ENGLAND • HE BELIEVED THAT THE BIBLE, NOT THE CHURCH, SHOULD BE REGARDED AS THE SUPREME SOURCE OF AUTHORITY FOR CHRISTIANS • DENOUNCED BISHOPS AND OTHER CLERGY FOR AMASSING WEALTH AND NEGLECTING THEIR RELIGIOUS DUTIES • HE AND HIS FOLLOWERS MADE THE FIRST TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE IN ENGLISH
  • 7. JOHN HUSS • A CZECH PRIEST • HEAD OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PRAGUE IN BOHEMIA • HE CHALLENGED THE AUTHORITY OF THE POPE AND CRITICIZED THE CHURCH’S WEALTH • HIS FOLLOWERS WERE CALLED HUSSITES • HE WAS ARRESTED, FOUND GUILTY OF HERESY, AND BURNED AT THE STAKE IN 1415.
  • 8. MARTIN LUTHER (1438- 1546) • GERMAN MONK WHO TAUGHT BIBLICAL STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WITTENBERG • HE BELIEVED THAT, WHILE A TRUE CHRISTIAN WOULD PERFORM GOOD WORKS, THESE DID NOT BRING SALVATION.CHRISTIANS COULD ONLY BE SAVED BY THE GRACE OF GOD, WHICH WOULD GRANT THEM FAITH IN CHRIST.

JOHN CALVIN (1509 – 1564) FRENCH SCHOLAR AND THEOLOGIAN JOINED THE REFORMERS IN GENEVA (SWITZERLAND) AND DEVELOPED THE FORM OF PROTESTANT BELIEF CALLED CALVINISM REGARDED THE BIBLE AS THE SUPREME AUTHORITY IN MATTERS OF FAITH  ATTACKED ABUSES BY THE CLERGY EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH IN SALVATION BELIEVED IN PREDESTINATION, THE BELIEF THAT CERTAIN PEOPLE WERE CHOSEN BY GOD FOR SALVATION WROTE “INSTITUE OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION” HIS FRENCH FOLLOWERS WERE CALLED HUGUENOTS
