Criminal Justice Issues. Beyond the topic that you have chosen for your
capstone project, what do you think is the most pressing criminal justice issue
that the United States faces today and why? What solutions can you create to
more effectively deal with the issue that you have chosen?

Capstone Project Prep. Provide your thesis statement and the resolution for the
issue that you have chosen to address for the Final Capstone Project.

Capstone Project Outline. Provide an outline highlighting the major points of
your capstone project for review and discussion among your classmates and
instructor. Review the presentations of your classmates and provide helpful
feedback, organizational ideas and appropriate sources to assist in the
preparation of the capstone project

Promoting Fairness. Detail the steps that criminal justice agencies must take to
promote notions of “equal justice” and fairness in the 21st Century.

Criminal Justice Tools. Provide at least three management tools or strategies
for effective police management in the future. How has technology changed the
ways in which police agencies and other law enforcement agencies operate?

Assignments

1. Due by Day 7. Capstone Project Rough Draft. Refer to
the complete Capstone Project instructions, in the “Components of Course
Evaluation” section of this guide, or Week Five of your online course. The focus of
the Capstone Project is stated below:

Focus of the Capstone Project

The focus of the capstone project seeks to solve a contemporary criminal and
social justice issue, through the application of information from sociology, law,
psychology, ethics, and related fields to the study of criminal justice. In
developing a proposed solution to a modern criminal and social justice issue,
students are encouraged to use scholarly sources, multimedia, interviews with
professionals in the field, and primary sources to identify and devise a workable
plan.

Within the proposed solution:
a. Examine the relationship of social justice and the operations of the criminal
justice system, including, but not limited to: crime scene investigation techniques
and security; the collection, preservation and presentation of evidence; issues
related to correctional institutions, incarceration, and release.

b. Analyze criminal and social justice theories in relation to the United States
Constitution.

c. Apply knowledge of socio-economic (cultural) diversity to contemporary
criminal and social justice.

d. Assess the centralization of criminal justice agencies domestically, the U.S.
Homeland Security Act, and the international aspects of criminal and social
justice.

In an eight to ten page paper (excluding the title and reference pages) address
the following:

a. An introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement.

b. The topic of the paper with critical thought.

c. Conclude with a restatement of the thesis and a conclusion paragraph.

d. Must use APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide to document
all sources.

e. Must include at least five academic resources outside of the course text (at
least two of which can be found in the Ashford Online Library). Cite your
resources in text and on the reference page.

f. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing
Center, within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar, in your
online course.

Death Penalty. Do you anticipate that the death penalty’s use will increase or
decrease over the next 20 years? Provide researched support for your answer.

Community Policing. Define community policing and critically evaluate its
effectiveness. Provide your opinion on whether or not community policing will
increase or decrease in the future; comment on its impact on society as a whole.

Assessing your Program of Study and Recommendations (Parts A and B.
Complete Parts A and B of this discussion. Part A: In 100 – 150 words, provide a
detailed assessment of your program of study, correlating to the ten learning
objectives set forth for your program of study (objectives listed below). Respond
to at least two of your classmates’ postings.
a. Examine law-enforcement issues.

b. Apply knowledge of socio-economic (cultural) diversity to criminal justice.

c. Understand the United States Constitution and the application of criminal and
social justice theories through the Constitution.

d. Investigate the operation of the criminal justice system.

e. Explore crime scene investigation techniques: crime scene security and the
collection, preservation and presentation of evidence.

f. Study correctional institutions and the criminal and social justice aspects of
incarceration and release issues.

g. Understand the centralization of criminal justice agencies domestically, the
U.S. Homeland Security act, and the international aspects of criminal and social
justice.

h. Examine the relationship of social justice to the criminal justice system.

i. Apply information from sociology, law, psychology, ethics, and related fields to
the study of criminal justice.

j. Solve a modern criminal and social justice issue through a comprehensive
capstone course.

Part B: Recommendations. In 100 – 150 words, provide your over-all assessment
of your program of study at Ashford University. What suggestions do you have to
improve the Criminal Justice Program?

The Future of Corrections. How have correctional facilities changed over the
past five decades? Predict what U.S. correctional systems will look like over the
next five decades. Are correctional facilities fixing crime issues or perpetuating
them?

comparisons of similar tactics/agencies in varying situations and their effects;
political and military trends and technology that directly impact the
tactics/organizations being influenced.

The paper must be twenty pages in length and formatted according to APA style.
You must use at least five scholarly resources (at least two of which can be found
in the Ashford Online Library) other than the textbook to support your claims and
subclaims. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. For information
regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within the
Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar, in your online course.

Writing the Capstone Project

The Capstone Project:

1. Must be at least 20 double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to
APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

2. Must include a title page with the following:

a. Title of paper

b. Student’s name

c. Coursenameandnumber

d. Instructor’s name

e. Date submitted

3. Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.

4. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
5. Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
