The Bahamas is a nation consisting of 29 islands and 661 cays. Tourism is one of the largest sectors of the economy and scuba diving is participating a lot to that success. Shallow reefs, 360 blue holes (underwater sinkholes) and almost no run off, sedimentation is very small, so visibility is excellent year around and then will please any kind of divers. In the Caribbean, Bahamas is famous for its shark feed diving and dives. In fact, many scuba dive centers offer the Shark Awareness Specialty course.   3. 3. NASSAU, HOME OF THE JAMES BOND WRECKSThe center of the diving activity in the Bahamas is Nassau. Nassau has over 15different diving spots.Shark Buoy is about an hour away from New Providence and it´s one of the bestsites to see and live the sharks. Silky sharks are attracted to thebuoy. The sharks are fed by professionals and you can get incredible photographs.Another good location for sharks is the Runaway and Shark Arena, usually up to20 Caribbean reef sharks will show up.Known as the James Bond wreck (since it appeared in the movie Never say Never)the wreck of the tug boat Tears of Allah is covered in corals. The wreck of theairplane the Vulcan Bomber also appeared in the James Bond movie Thurnderball. 3
  4. 4. The Lost Blue Hole is a truly unique spot, 100 ft. across and 200 ft.deep, this dive site’s crevices are full of lobsters. The rim is surroundedby coral heads and many small fish like banded jawfish and tobacco fish.In Nassau, there are plenty of activities to do on land as well as underwater.The Bahamas National Trust/Retreat Garden has the biggest collection of exoticpalms in the world. Adelaide Village has colonial roots and was created by SirJames Carmichael Smyth in 1831 for disembarking the slave ships. 4
  5. 5. GRAND BAHAMAS ISLAND, SHARKSSCUBA DIVE GALOREGrand Bahama Island is just 55 miles east of Florida and it has the most family-friendlyresorts in the area. The island is about 93 mi. (150 km.) wide and 12 mi. (20 km.) long(north-south). It is a big destination for cruise ships.Scubadiving in Grand Bahama gives you the opportunity to doshark dives, wreck dives and some amazing reef dives too.At Shark Junction, the feed starts at 40 ft. and expect Caribbean reef sharks andhammerheads.Ben’s Blue Hole is a horseshoe shape ledge where you´ll be able to follow a fracture overtwo coral heads to enter a smaller blue hole. Dog snappers and schools of creole fishaccompany you through this site.Theo´s wreck is a 230 ft. long vessel, built in Norway, sunk in 1982 by UNEXO (UnderwaterExplorers Society) close to some coral banks. It’s a great site to spot moray eels and spottedeels. 5

Another site called Picasso´sGallery has a beautiful stringof coral heads on a sandyplateau, on one of them you´ll findstar corals of three different colors.In Grand Bahamas you can alsofind 18 of the 28 endemic birdspecies. A visit to Rand NatureCenter is definitely good forbirding. The Junkanoo Beach Clubhas a beautiful reef to snorkel andreally good restaurants to try localsea food. 6
  7. 7. BIMINI ISLAND, CALM ISLAND LIFEThe Gulf Stream heats Bimini’s coral reefs and feeds them. Bimini is good both for divingand fishing. Nine different excellent sites are found here.The Mamita Rita wreck has good visibility and makes for a great night dive. AtlantisRoad (Bimini Road) is one the biggest tourist attractions in Bimini and a veryinteresting dive site too, it´s said to be the entrance of the Lost City of Atlantis.Tuna Alley is a reef system north of Cat Cay, has a very healthy wall with coral formations at45 ft. that drop down to 80-100 ft. This site has been referred to as the best dive site inthe Bahamas. When the Gulf Stream is running this is a great drift dive.Loggerhead turtles are often spotted here.Moray Alley is one of the deepest reefs and attracts southern stingrays and Frenchangelfish.The Bimini Islands were visited by Ernest Hemingway in the 1930´s and just like hewas, people are still attracted to the laid back environment, great fishing and calm islandlife. 7
  8. 8. ANDROS ISLAND, 140 MILE LONG REEFAndros is the largest island of the Bahamas. Composed of North Andros, Mangrove Cay andSouth Andros, the islands have the world´s third largest barrier reef. The Barrier reef is overa 140 miles long! It has a network of freshwater and saltwater blue holes.The inland blue holes are very unique aquatic caves. Little Frenchman Inland Blue Hole isaccessible from shore, it has a layer of fresh water on top, the debris and tannins from thesurface makes visibility very hard sometimes as you decent, but as you reach the saltwaterlayer, the water becomes crystal clear.Guardian Inland Blue Hole is another fun dive where you can do underwaterspelunking. The Amphitheatre has an incredible coral structure, at 57 ft. (18 m.) there is asand path with rising coral walls giving the site its name. Green sea turtles are spotted heresometimes.Diving the Blue Holes at Andros is one of the best diving experiences in Bahamas. Severalguided tours are offered by the tourist office in Andros which include mountain biking andhiking. 8
  9. 9. EXUMA KEYS, CAVES & SHARKSThe Exuma Islands are an archipelago of 365 cays, 300 miles south-east of the United States.Amber Jack Reef is a superb spot; it is one of the shark feeds. You will seemany Caribbean reef sharks swimming around large groupers. Norman´s Cay has agood drift dives.Mystery Cave extends beneath Stocking Island. The cave starts at 15 ft. and drops to about100 ft. deep. It is an extended network of caverns.Highborn Key Wall is a good deep scuba too. Many of the dive sites in Exuma althoughaccessible by dive operators on the island, are popular sites visited by liveaboards. fcdfv 9
