    • Social Media and SEO Austin SEO Meetup – Scott True 1. General Concepts 2. The correlation and confirmation 3. But it doesn’t matter because there is overlap with your efforts anyway 4. Best Practices with Michael Robin
    • General Concepts
    • What is Social Media? Mission Facebooks mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. Company Overview Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.A Social Place Online for Real People to connect Be Sociable, not Salesy!
    • Social Media is integrated into Search!
    • Social Media is Idexable
    • Social Media affects the SEO of your site! • Social Media signals are being looked at • Page rank becoming less important • The human vote weighing in more
    • The Correlation
    • “So primarily, it has been used a little bit more in the real time sort of search, where youmight see individual tweets or other links showing up and streaming up on the page. We’restudying how much sense it makes to use it a little more widely within our web searchrankings.” Matt Cutts - http://youtu.be/ofhwPC-5Ub4Uploaded by GoogleWebmasterHelp on Dec 17, 2010We know that great content comes from great authors, and we’re looking closely at ways thismarkup could help us highlight authors and rank search results.http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/06/authorship-markup-and-web-search.html
    • http://www.searchmetrics.com/en/press-releases/ranking-factors/
    • Two important things to keep in mind1. You really shouldn’t do any one aspect ofmarketing/ SEO by itself. Social Media should fitinto a larger “holistic” approach; it should be onepiece of a larger puzzle.2. All efforts overlap! Even if it didn’t help with SEO,it will still help. It still helps to show up to the“social gathering” and network.
    • The Confirmation• SEOMOZ did an experiment where they concluded that pages got indexed immediately after posting in on Google plus. https://plus.google.com/+SEOmoz/videos• Google and Bing respond to an interview http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-bing-confirm- twitter-facebook-influence-seo• Eric Schmidt Confirms: The Social Signal is a Ranking Factor - “The social signal, the people you ‘hang with’ is actually a ranking signal”. http://www.stateofsearch.com/eric-schmidt-confirms- the-social-signal-is-a-ranking-factor/
    • The pointYes, there is a correlation where we don’t knowwhat causes what. This is especially true whentalking about how much weight is given to eachsocial media metric. But, we also haveconfirmations too. This is the part that I think ismissing in a lot of talks/blogs/conversations.There is no more “what if”. It’s happening andit’s shifting more in this direction.
    • Metrics associated with Social Media and authors• Diversity of sources that share and comment• Timing of shares and comments• Surrounding text• Engagement level• Quality of friends and followers• Importance of friends and followers• Analysis of friends/follower ratios• Topic focus/ relevance
    • These articles are talking about Author authority and SEO• http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/social-authority-meets-search-measuring- influence• http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/social-rank-and-author-authority-the-future- of-social-seo• http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/social-link-anatomy-understanding-the- value-of-a-social-link
    • Authors are becoming the new page rank Who is this? Are they Active? Are they Real? Are they an Influencer?
    • What to do with Social Media?Engage with you database/ Advocates Target • Influencers • Your Friends (This is social media) • SEO a by-productBuild Author Rank and use it in your site Influencers will effect page scores
    • Authorship Markup
    • My conclusion• The best SEO will come from thinking about the consumer and not about SEO• Satisfy the humans and the search engines will also take notice• If you build your brand on social media really well, your website will probably start showing up more in Google• If you engage with people on facebook, you are not only networking and getting referrals, but people may link to you “naturally” when they make a reference in blogs• At the very least, use facebook to reach influential people in your industry
    • Take away• Social media is a great communication means• Social media is great for growing your sphere of influence• Social media is a great place to be social and get referrals• Being engaging online matters to your SEO• All this activity will help your business and (through overlap) help your site
