1. Walking Out of Darkness is a Book
About Overcoming Loss . . .
. . . And Living a More Fulfilling Life
2. We wrote “Walking Out of Darkness” to be a comfort to
anyone that has lost someone in their life, or is going
through a difficult time in life. No matter how devastating
a loss or challenge in life may seem, there is beauty in the
world around us. In this book, we try to encourage readers
to recognize and appreciate the magnificence and beauty
that surrounds us.
3. Humans have memorialized their lost loved ones since the
beginning of mankind. The death of a loved one can tear a
hole in the fabric of our lives. But given time, we can find
ways to weave the stories, wisdom, and spirits of our
departed loved ones into the tapestry of our lives.
4. John Wayne in a scene from the film “She Wore a Yellow
Ribbon.” In the film, the character played by Wayne visits
the grave of his departed wife and speaks to her as if she
were still alive. The scene illustrates that although death
ends life, it does not end our relationship with our loved
ones.
5. Our brief sojourn on earth is like a rainbow; beautiful,
ephemeral, and seemingly conjured out of nothing more
substantial than a mixture of sunlight and water vapor.
Rainbows may be transient, but they are glorious precisely
because they reflect the eternal light of the sun. The ruins of
Dunluce Castle, perched on the coast of Northern Ireland, are a
timeless reminder of the impermanence of life.
6. Beauty is health food for the soul. There is something about
beauty that aligns our spirits to the goodness in life. Beauty can
make us feel like we are in the presence of the divine. There are
days when the beauty we encounter is so overwhelming that it
seems that God must be an artist and the world his canvas.
When we are surrounded by beauty the soul blossoms.
7. My motto is Carpe Diem (“Seize the Day”). Our loved ones
would want us to live fully and savor every moment. When
we fill our moments with love, we create memories that glow
– Bridget Carley author of “Walking Out of Darkness.”
8. The butterfly is a symbol of hope and transcendence.
Sometimes, it can seem like we are caterpillars inching our
way towards some impossibly remote goal. But like the
homely caterpillar, each of us contains within ourselves the
power of transcending our circumstances. Sometimes, we
must go beyond ourselves, so that we may find a great wind
and spread our wings.
9. Bridget Carley earned her Bachelor's degree in Sociology from
Merrimack College. She has worked in the social services as a
counselor and probation officer. She is an active participant in
the bereavement community and a hospice volunteer. Walking
Out of Darkness is her first book.
Scott O'Reilly is an independent writer. He graduated from
Fairfield University where he majored in psychology and
philosophy. His articles have appeared in The Humanist,
Philosophy Now, The National Catholic Reporter, and many
other publications.
“There are so many opportunities in life; it is up to us to grasp
them. One step at a time forward, and one small act of kindness
towards others, can help us heal ourselves and our fellow
travelers. When we transform pain into something positive, then
we are fulfilling our highest and most divine potential. In this
way, we can help create a brighter world for all.” (excerpted from
“Walking Out of Darkness”).
