I present on Tuesday, 11/03/2009 to the Mahopac, NY school district for our Superintendent’s day staff meeting events. I will be hi-lighting much of your work from our VR ’field trip’ to ISTE... I’m taking three sessions to the Blogger’s Hut and for a treat.. to the Virtual Reality Room!

Hopefully some Docent’s will be around to hold brief discussions.

Hey Scott ... Thanx for being an SL good guy!

Scott... Just wanted to say YOU ROCK!

    Wow, Jack,

Thank you so much for your comment. It warms the ol’ heart. I’m just trying, as are a few of us nutcases, to share the excitement, the potentials, the (dare we say it?) fun of these new tools with others--in an effort to unlock still more potentials for teaching and learning. I am struck by the insight you share about a key element of it all: the level playing field, and its effectiveness in bringing down barriers that keep out some players. Of course, the hardware/bandwidth divide is the great barrier here, but I have high hopes the powers-that-be are awakening to solution alternatives for that.

I’m a big fan of your dedication and effort Scott... We’ve met on ISTE before (Jack Buxbaum) from SUNY Empire State College.

One of my mentor’s, Dr. Eileen O’Connor from SUNY , ESC who is a mentor for our M.A.T. Graduate Studies Program, of which I am currently a student of and am currently under the tutelage from in the degree program, have begun to take the lead in promoting SL into our Graduate Degree Program Studies in our Masters in arts in Teaching M.A.T. Those of us involved are pioneering the use of teaching and learning in the SL forum.

We concur with your views and have embraced much of SL as a viable tool for providing a platform to deliver quality and enhanced education to many as a ’leveled playing field’ to cross barriers which were once perceived as having had societal or class inequities as well as being pedagogically un-obtainable to those of mind-set or skill-set that hasn’t had the right attributes to engage, interest or intrigue the adolescent learner or even the progressive teacher.

It is great progressives like you and many others that give their time to this dedicated cause, that is educating and making easy the ’row to hoe’ in getting a greater gist and clearer understanding of the many benefits to build upon in our collective journey into Virtual Education and Web 3.0 access and implementation.

I’m forawarding this work of yours and all other relevant web 3.0 tools connected with you personally to the SL-Advisory Committee recently formed at SUNY Empire State College and hope to speak with you again soon. I can’t say enough about your work on ISTE Island in the Bloggers Hut and now here on Slideshare.

    Cheers Scott!

Jack Mosel, (NYS Secondary Earth Science 7-12)

Wow. I went in after a slideshare email told me there’d been a lot of activity at this show, and it completely, clearly and definitely showed me there’d been over 20,000 views of this slidecast. Now it’s saying there are 268. What gives? Anybody have any clue about this?

Slide Number 3, the quote from Dana Gardner at ZDNet, gets truncated in Slideshare and my first attempt to fix it was unsuccessful. That’s unfortunate because the lead-in quote in its entirety is 'What makes Second Life eerily powerful is the zero-distance between thinkers and technology' (But now you have it here! :)

Why Second Life Scott Merrick For VU CSO - Presentation Transcript

  1. Why Second Life? by Scott Merrick, for Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach Faculty and Staff, Feb. 20, 2009
  2. What is Second Life?
    • Officially : “ Second Life is a free online virtual world imagined and created by its Residents. From the moment you enter Second Life, you'll discover a fast-growing digital world filled with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity .” http:// secondlife.com/whatis
    • Dana Gardner, ZDNet : “ What makes Second Life eerily powerful is the zero-distance between thinkers and technology …
“ It took about an hour before I finally switched from thinking that my initial experiences with Second Life were a waste of time — to actually finding them being productive in new ways… What was different is that I was a virtual arm's length from some heavy-hitting IBM talent and leadership, and I was able to communicate with them, and learn from them quite well. That is not always the case in the real world, where crowds, noise, location, and the competition can get in the way. There is an egalitarian equalizing effect when your avatar IMs with another … even if you know who they are. There's a comfort level with being virtual, and the IBMers seemed eager to chat with lots of folks. I can see getting better access to executives and the creative minds at IBM in Second Life than I do in real life, and that's a good thing…”
    • Peggy Sheehy: “What does the virtual landscape offer us that is absent from other online learning communities? The answer is that sense of presence, the ambiance of place and connection—that feeling of ‘being there.’ Other distance-learning vehicles may offer flexible time options but are mostly impersonal. The avatar encounter is highly interactive, and interpersonal, providing the same convenience of not having to travel while offering a richer, more immersive, and generally more congenial experience.”
    • From ISTE’s Technology & Learning , February 2009 http ://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newbay/tl_200902/

  11. Why Should You Care?
    • Three Reasons
      • Personal
      • Learning
      • Network
  12. From :
    • deangroom @scottmerrick because its more engaging and visually interactive that Elluminate (press the mic button), put your hand up, etc.
    • onlineteacher @scottmerrick Simple ... either become part of the future of education or disappear with the past ... its happening folks! My $0.02 *:-)
Me: am working on my one shot at explaining to my folks at » link to scienceoutreach.org , in just one hour, why they should be interested in Second Life. Input?
  13. Why Should You Care?
    • Three Reasons
      • Other universities and organizations are leaving us in the virtual dust
  14. For Example:
    • UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES & SCHOOLS
    • NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
    • EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS (Non-Profit / Not For profit)
    • EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS (Private / For profit)
    • LIBRARIES
    • MUSEUMS
    From Simteach.com
  15. Why Should You Care?
    • Three Reasons
      • Long Reach/ Cost
      • Effectiveness
  16. Our initial presence in Second Life is a rental offered at a greatly reduced rate by my friend and colleague Kathy Schrock, Discovery Educator , Apple Educator, and much much more, including innovative owner of Lighthouse Learning Island, where our virtual HQ resides. $300 has leased us a gracious plenty of “property” through the academic school year 2010. My hope is that we trial-run a number of projects before the end of that time that will justify further investment of time an resources, toward establishing a pre-eminence in the field of distance education outreach facilitated by Virtual Environments.
