Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 –Background <ul><li>” Scientia potentia est (Francis Bacon).” From knowledge management to information sharing? </li></ul><ul><li>An active citizen demands information and wants to participate and interact. He wants to do things and inform instead of being the object of information. </li></ul><ul><li>The greater amount of information is produced digitally every day and 24/7 availability is expected. This creates a pressure for municipal governments to develop new, alternative ways of democratic participation and decision making. </li></ul><ul><li>Library users are getting more and more accustomed to use Internet and expect up-to-date network services. Especially juniors. </li></ul><ul><li>The libraries and librarians have to redefine their space and roles in this world of the Internet. </li></ul><ul><li>Web Library 2.0 will serve as a modern forum for local community and a channel for information and interaction for inhabitants of Hämeenlinna City. </li></ul>

Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 – The starting point <ul><li>Web 2.0 technology and philosophy: </li></ul><ul><li>Presages a freeing of data. </li></ul><ul><li>Permits the building of virtual applications. </li></ul><ul><li>Is participative. </li></ul><ul><li>Applications work for the user. </li></ul><ul><li>Applications are modular. </li></ul><ul><li>Is about sharing: code, content, ideas. </li></ul><ul><li>Is about communication and facilitating community. </li></ul><ul><li>Is about remix. </li></ul><ul><li>Is smart. </li></ul><ul><li>Opens up the Long Tail. </li></ul><ul><li>Is built upon TRUST.(Paul Miller, Technology Evangelist, Talis) </li></ul>

Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 - The starting point <ul><li>Hämeenlinna Library’s existing Internet services as well the nationwide Internet services are fragmented and the only possibile to integrate them is linking. </li></ul><ul><li>The user interfaces of the library systems are out of date. Our web library, Web-Origo has not been developed recently. </li></ul><ul><li>Hämeenlinna Library’s existing home pages needs renewing. We update them manually writing html code. </li></ul><ul><li>Internet is more and more important marketing channel, a library’s shop window. </li></ul><ul><li>People are not visiting the library physically as often as in the old days, before Internet, Google. </li></ul><ul><li>But do we know what kind of net service our custemers are waiting? </li></ul><ul><li>Are we able to evaluate our recouses in Hämeenlinna Library? </li></ul>
  • 5. Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 – The project <ul><li>Launched in spring 2007 </li></ul><ul><li>In cooperation with the Akateeminen Tietopalvelu (ATP). (The supplier of the library IT system.) -> merged 1.1.2008 Axiell Library Group </li></ul><ul><li>Axiell Arena – the virtual library. </li></ul><ul><li>Axiell Portal: the virtual library + library’s webpage. The technological base. </li></ul><ul><li>Liferay portal sofware. The open source portal solution. </li></ul><ul><li>Teamwork. Axiell. The stuff of the Hämeenlinna City Library. Other libraries? Customers? Other Arena libraries in Sweden, Denmark? </li></ul><ul><li>The project is being carried out with the support of Ministry of Education. </li></ul><ul><li>The service should be ready for production use in Juny 2009. </li></ul><ul><li>Hämeenlinna is one of the pilot libraries of Axiell Arena. </li></ul><ul><li>Other pilot libraries are: Norrköpings stadsbibliotek (Sweden) and Espjerg kommunes biblioteker (Denmark) </li></ul>

Quick, carefree and successful information retrieval </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>” Google search” + advanced search, clustering (facets), Information search and location is easy. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Indexing of background systems, quick search. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Linking services (SFX). </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Multi- federated search. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Guiding information search, ”0-hit” help. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The system which supports customers to help themselves. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A Relevant information search result. </li></ul></ul></ul>

Modern, attractive and visible </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Adding rich enhancements, such as reviews, book jackets, similar titles,consisting of front pages, summaries, portraits of authors, samples of texts or music, Googlebooks, Library Thing. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Focusing on the presentation of the collection: attractiveness, links, hints, The Long Tail, serendipity. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Reliability. Up-to-date. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Come out of a bookstore! Let your personality show! </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Visibility. Google. A library module in other Internet services? </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>What is essential? What is library’s service consept? </li></ul></ul></ul>

Participation services and communality. </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Patrons can take part in production of contents: tags, reviews, polling, rating,recommendating. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Communality, interaction, communicating, meeting place. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Literary circles, literary discussions. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A two-way, active information channel between patrons and librarians. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Communality and cooperation of the libraries and librarians. Shared reviews, recommendation lists, a reading diploma. </li></ul></ul></ul>

Curses, workshops, rooming-in? </li></ul><ul><li>Working together. Pupils, teachers, librarians, customers. Who is a teacher? Who is an advisor? Changed roles. </li></ul>

Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 - The Service Consept <ul><li>Our goal is to form a functional library-minded Internet community for the Hämeenlinna region, which will be part of all Finnish public libraries’ shared interaction and information forum. </li></ul><ul><li>The function of the library community is to strengthen an individual’s identity by supporting creativity and by offering culture, information and opportunities for social influence. </li></ul>

Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 - The Service Consept <ul><li>The home pages edited by the Hämeenlinna City Library constitute one part of Arena –services which has been built on Liferay platform, an open source portal software. </li></ul><ul><li>Library info, news, activities, music, reading, children and young people, ask and tell </li></ul><ul><li>In the middle of the service there is Axiell Arena- an interactive web library. </li></ul><ul><li>Makupalat – A Link Library of the Hämeenlinna City Library and Häme-Wiki – A local Wikipedia of Hämeenlinna City Library are the compact parts of the project. </li></ul><ul><li>Hämeenlinna City Library elsewhere in the Internet: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Hämeenlinnan kirjaston lokikirja (The Blog of the Hämeenlinna City Library) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Sitaatti-inspiraatioita (Citation insipirations) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Facebook </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Youtube </li></ul></ul>
