Iaşi was the capitalof Moldavia during 1564 - 1859, one of the two capitals of the UnitedPrincipalities between 1859 and 1862 and the capital of Romania between1916-1918.Iasi is the cultural, economic and academic center of Moldavia. The firstuniversity in Romania was founded here and it still operates. Its name is“Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, today one of the most prestigiousacademic institutions in the country.
