    2. 2. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseIntroductionDo we recognize intelligence when we see it?
    3. 3. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseSomething from the Wind, Rain, and Time?
    4. 4. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseSomething from Water and Erosion?
    5. 5. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseJust Lines Formed by Natural Means on a Cave Wall?
    6. 6. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause• No reasonable person would conclude Mt. Rushmore, an arrowhead ora cave painting happened by natural means alone.• We know how to differentiate an intelligent cause vs. a natural cause. We Instinctively Recognize Marks of Intelligence
    7. 7. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause• Central principle in forensic scienceis the Principe of Uniformity.• The principle states that causes andeffects in the past are like causesand effects observed today.• By the Principle of Uniformity, weassume that an intelligent effect isthe result of an intelligent cause. How Do We Recognize Intelligence?
    8. 8. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause• Every agent acts for an end, evennatural agents.• Now what acts for an endmanifests intelligence.• But natural agents have nointelligence of their own.• Therefore, they are directed totheir end by some Intelligence.- Thomas AquinasFamed Catholic TheologianHow Do We Recognize Intelligence?
    9. 9. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseThe Difference Between Natural and Intelligent Agents• Aquina‟s first premise is simply the self-evident principle of finality.• The second premise states that all things move to some end.• The third premise says whatever lacks intelligence must be directed byintelligence, as an arrow is towards a target.• The conclusion follows that all things are directed by some intelligence.
    10. 10. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseIdentifying Intelligence at the Right Level• Is a fully robotic auto assembly line not a work of intelligence simplybecause no humans are present?• No, the intelligence is just one step removed.• The same can be said of the many biological micro-machines present in life.
    11. 11. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseAvoiding the False Dilemma• Atheists oftentimes present the false dilemma of (1) Science or (2) God.• Such a thing is like asking: why and how does the car robotics factory exist?(1) The laws of physics, engineering, and chance, or (2) A designer?• Everyone understands the fallacy of such a question. There is a differenceat which level intelligence is introduced.• There is also a difference between agency (a designer) and mechanism(various scientific laws and methods).
    12. 12. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseThe Design ArgumentA Look at the Teleological Argument for God
    13. 13. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseThe Teleological Argument for GodThe teleological (telos, from the Greek word “design” ) argument for God saysthat the universe and humankind exhibit marks of intelligence and design.• Behind every complex design is a designer.• The universe has a complex design.• Therefore, the universe has a designer.
    14. 14. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseKey Question to be AnsweredDoes the universe and life exhibit design?
    15. 15. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseAtheists Answer, “Yes, but…”“Living objects . . . lookdesigned, they lookoverwhelmingly as thoughthey‟re designed. Biology isthe study of complicatedthings which give theimpression of having beendesigned for a purpose.”– Richard DawkinsBiologist
    16. 16. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“It seems to me that Richard Dawkinsconstantly overlooks the fact that Darwinhimself, in the fourteenth chapter of TheOrigin of Species, pointed out that hiswhole argument began with a being whichalready possessed reproductive powers. This is the creature the evolution of whicha truly comprehensive theory of evolutionmust give some account. Darwin himselfwas well aware that he had not producedsuch an account. It now seems to me thatthe findings of more than fifty years ofDNA research have provided materials fora new and enormously powerful argumentto design.”-Anthony FlewFormer outspoken atheist
    17. 17. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseAtheists Answer, “Yes, but…”“Biologists must constantlykeep in mind that what theysee was not designed, butrather evolved.”– Francis CrickCo-Discoverer of DNA
    18. 18. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“Darwinian biologists mustkeep repeating thatreminder to themselvesbecause otherwise theymight become conscious ofthe reality that is staringthem in the face and tryingto get their attention.”– Phillip JohnsonBerkley Law Professor
    19. 19. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseTwo Key Pieces of Evidence for an Intelligent Designer1. The Fine Tuning Argument (or Anthropic Principle).2. Specified Complexity.
    20. 20. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseThe Fine Tuning Argument• Sometimes called “The Goldilocks Effect” and “Anticipatory Design”.• Purposes that the fundamental constants and quantities of nature fall intoan exquisitely narrow range of values which render our universe life-permitting.• States that if these constants and quantities were altered by even a hair‟sbreadth, the delicate balance would be upset and life could not exist.• Argues that the naturalist proposal of time + matter + change is insufficientto explain the conditions we find that support life.
    21. 21. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseA Few Examples of Fine Tuning• Oxygen currently makes up 21 percent of the atmosphere. Were it 25 percent, fires woulderupt everywhere and if it were 15 percent, humans would suffocate.• If gravity was altered by 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000001percent, the sun would not exist and the moon would crash into earth.• If the centrifugal force of planetary movements did not precisely balance the gravitationalforces, nothing could be held in orbit around the sun.• If the universe was expanding at a rate one millionth more slowly than it is, thetemperature on earth would be 10,000 degrees.• If Jupiter was not exactly where it is, earth would be bombarded by space material thatwould threaten life on the planet.
    22. 22. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseA Few Examples of Fine Tuning• If the thickness of the earth‟s crust was greater, too much oxygen would be transferred tothe crust to support life, and if it were thinner, volcanic and tectonic activity would makelife impossible.• The axis of the earth is set so carefully that, if it were altered ever so slightly, surfacetemperatures of the earth would be far too great.• If water vapor levels in the atmosphere were greater than they are now, a runawaygreenhouse effect would cause temperatures to rise far too high on the planet – life woulddie out. And if they were less, an insufficient greenhouse effect would make the earth toocold to support life.
    23. 23. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseWhat are the Odds?• Astrophysicist Hugh Ross has calculated that the odds of all anthropicconstants and quantities (122 at last count) to be in place for any planet inthe universe by luck alone to be one chance in ten with 138 zeros after it.• This number becomes even more incredible when one realizes there areonly 1070 atoms in the entire universe.• Mathematicians point out that anything which exceeds 1050 power is theexact same thing as zero chance.
    24. 24. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CausePossible Explanations for Fine Tuning• Physical Necessity – not possibleas the cosmological constantsexist outside of the environment. The constants and quantitiescould be different; they don‟t haveto be what they are.• Chance – exceeds anymathematical possibility. As forthe multi-verse, no empirical dataexists to confirm its existence.• Intelligent Designer – best answerfor an appeal to best explanation.Only ruled out by atheistsbecause of anti-supernaturalworldview.
    25. 25. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“The initial configuration of theuniverse” appears to have been“very carefully chosen.”– Stephen HawkingFamed Physicist
    26. 26. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“In the absence of an absurdly-improbable accident, theobservations of modern scienceseem to suggest anunderlying, one mightsay, supernatural plan.”– Arno PenziasNobel Laureate scientist
    27. 27. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseThe Argument of Specified Complexity• Argues that nature and life (e.g. human beings) contain the imprint of anintelligent cause, with evidence such as DNA bearing the marks of aDesigner.• Purposes that life is encoded with information that demonstrates anintelligent cause.
    28. 28. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseThe Presence of Information in Life• Atheists like Darwinist Richard Dawkins admit that the message found injust the cell nucleus of an amoeba is more than all thirty volumes of theEncyclopedia Britannica.• The entire amoeba itself has as much information in its DNA as 1,000complete sets of the Encyclopedia Britannica.• The important thing to understand is that the makeup of these entities isnot random, but instead the information is highly organized.
    29. 29. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseAn Atheist Talks Life and Information“What lies at the heart of every livingthing is not a fire, warmbreath, nor a „spark of life‟. It isinformation, words, instructions….Think of a billion discrete digitalcharacters.... If you want tounderstand life think aboutinformation technology.”– Richard Dawkins
    30. 30. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseThe Difference Between Data and Information
    31. 31. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause"Ask anybody what the physicalworld is made of, and you arelikely to be told "matter andenergy." Yet if we have learnedanything fromengineering, biology andphysics, information is just ascrucial an ingredient." –Scientific AmericanJuly 2003
    32. 32. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“If you‟re trying to explain an event in theremote past you should rely on ourknowledge of the cause/effect structure ofthe world and you should be looking for acause that has the capability or power toproduce the known effect in question. . . .Darwin‟s mentor Charles Lyell . . . put itthis way: „In investigating the past weshould be looking for causes now inoperation‟. Now as to Information andintelligence: What is the cause now inoperation of digital information? That isintelligence. By using Darwin‟s ownprinciple of reasoning, we can use aninference to the best explanation:intelligence produces information.”- Stephen Meyer
    33. 33. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseDNA Resembles Software Design“At first approximation, one can thereforethink of DNA as an instructional script, asoftware program, sitting in the nucleus ofthe cell. Its coding language has only fourletters (or two bits, in computer terms). Aparticular instruction known as a gene, ismade up of hundreds or thousands ofletters of code.”- Francis Collins
    34. 34. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“It is important to understandthat we are not reasoning byanalogy [with DNA]. Thesequence hypothesis appliesdirectly to the protein and thegenetic text as well as to writtenlanguage and therefore thetreatment is mathematicallyidentical.”– Herbert YockeyNon-Theist Biologist
    35. 35. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseDNA Bears the Mark of an Intelligent Cause• DNA is mathematically identical toa language.• What language has ever risenwithout an intelligent cause?• “Investigations of many organisms, from bacteria to humans, revealedthat this „genetic code‟, by whichinformation in DNA and RNA istranslated into protein, is universalin all known organisms. No towerof Babel was to be allowed in thelanguage of life. . . . How deeplysatisfying is the digital elegance ofDNA!” – Francis Collins
    36. 36. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“If science is based onexperience, then science tells us thatthe message encoded in DNA musthave originated from an intelligentcause. What kind of intelligent agentwas it? On its own, science cannotanswer this question; it must leave it toreligion and philosophy. But that shouldnot prevent science fromacknowledging evidences for anintelligent cause origin wherever theymay exist.”- Dean KenyonBiophysicist
    37. 37. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseConclusionsFinal Thoughts
    38. 38. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“Is it not to be wondered at that ourarchaeologist immediately infersintelligent origin when faced with a fewsimple scratches whereas somescientists, when faced with the 3.5billion letter sequence of the humangenome, inform us that it is to beexplained solely in terms of chanceand necessity?”- John Lennox
    39. 39. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent CauseDesign or Chance? One DesignOne by Chance?
    40. 40. The Essentials of Apologetics – Why God: An Intelligent Cause“I think the origins of the laws ofnature and of life and theUniverse point clearly to anintelligent source. The burdenof proof is on those who argueto the contrary.”-Anthony FlewFormer outspoken atheist
