Social Media - Explained at light speed

 1. 1. Social Media Explained at Light-Speed (Ok, not actually light speed but in about 5 minutes) Kevin Fernando
 2. 2. Today’s Internet Consumer

A Nielsen survey has shown that less than 14% of people trust online advertising but over 90% of people trust personal recommendations, and 70% of people trust peer reviews!

This means that consumers assign more trust to people they know and even random strangers (each other) than they do a business trying to sell them something

So in essence, if you can go from being perceived as a another business trying to sell something (a salesman) to a friend (trusted advisor), you will then have much more credibility and people will buy from you

 3. 3. Become A Friend and Earn More

With so many businesses offering virtually identical services and products, often the chief factor in deciding between competing offerings for consumers is price

This is because consumers have no “investment” in the companies they are buying from

As earlier stated, if you can create this investment by becoming a “friend” or trusted advisor, then that creates a unique point of differentiation for you relative to your competitors in the eyes on the consumer

Once this relationship is established, you can then actually sell products or services at a higher price than before and still makes more sales!

Why? Well if you think about it, wouldn’t you rather by something from a friend rather than a stranger even though the stranger was 10-20% cheaper? Most people would, and the difference here is driven by trust and the fact that you genuinely like your friend. Not to mention you regard your friend as more credible than the random stranger and believe that your friend has your best interests in mind making them the better buy.

 4. 4. How Do I Become A Trusted Advisor?

In short, by answering questions people may have for free!

People go online primarily to search for information or for entertainment

So if you can provide one or both of those things then people will tune in

As a by product of this, you will be able to create meaningful relationships with your consumers through interaction

Social Media is the vehicle that you can use to deliver this content and connect with interested individuals

 5. 5. Tips For Social Media Success

Find users who are interested in your industry or field and join the social networks they use or join the ones where you think you will find your target audience

Deliver unique content not advertisements regarding these products (blog posts, how to guides, videos, entertainment pieces, relevant links, tips, reviews etc.) Basically anything that is genuinely USEFUL and RELVEVANT

Engage users in conversation around the topics they’re interested in. It is SOCIAL media after all.

Once some rapport is built, you can then ask users for their contact information so that you can keep them in the loop with all the newest content you are releasing, special offers and important announcements.

You can also mix in some VERY LIGHT self-selling or self promoting messages in the content you’re offering

Once you have their contact information or they contact you as a result of your great content, you can then stay in touch with them and sell to them!

 6. 6. Which ones should I use?

Facebook > 355, 000, 000 users

Youtube > 834 000 000 videos

LinkedIn > 35, 000, 000 users

Twitter > 50, 000, 000 users

 7. 7. Social Media - Top 3 Questions

Q: Is Social Media Free? A: Well that depends on your definition of free. Generally its free to create an account and deliver content but creating useful content and participating in the community takes time and energy. So if time is money then no it is not free.

Q: Is this Social Media thing a fad?

A: No but the sad truth is because most businesses dive in with no measureable goals or a sound social media strategy they don’t accomplish anything valuable. Like all other correctly done marketing initiatives, social media requires planning, time, and commitment. Q: How do we create a Social media plan?

A: There isn’t a short answer for this one but generally, a social media plan starts with an clear objective. From this objective you then formulate a strategy using social media as you vehicle. Once your strategy is in place, you then plan and execute the tactics needed to accomplish the objective while measuring your results along the way.
