How Glaciers Change the landscape
Glaciers wear away the landscape and cause erosion.
Glaciers are big masses of moving ice that pick up rocks, dirt, tree bark, etc.
What is erosion?
To wear away land by the action of water, wind, or glacial ice.
The Grand Canyon was formed by erosion.
Where are glaciers located?
Hubbard is the largest tidewater glacier on the North American continent. Hubbard has also been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska ever since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895 (Davidson, 1903). And, this is happening despite climate change and the fact that many glaciers are thinning and retreating.
Where are glaciers located (continued!)
Many of the worlds largest glaciers are located in Alaska.
Most of all glaciers are located in cold regions.
How are glaciers helpful?
Glaciers are used for drinking water.
Glaciers are also used to irrigate crops.
Glacier Fun Facts
Glaciers store over 70% of Earth’s fresh water.
If we don’t save glaciers they will melt and the Earth’s water level would rise 80 meters and cover some low land.
There are over 160,000 glaciers located in the world.
