It’s my Ubuntu remix with ownCloud. Right now itis just a VM (Virtual Machine) playable using VMware Player 5(which is free for non-commercial uses) or VMware Workstation 9(which is not free).I will get more in-depth as to what Ubento is, what customizations Ihave added and how you can do them all yourself but first I justwant to explain what this is, why you might want it, and how youcan get it working right now.First, let me sell you on this. But note Iam not trying to sell you anything – all software provided is free. But feel free to make a donation because it is not easy puttingthese kind of things together. Also, if you want to hire me to create one of these for you, or tohelp you troubleshoot issues related to this, please feel free tocontact me. If you have general questions about how to install thisand get it working or you are caught on a step, please commenthere and I will answer as best I can. Ok, now why would you wantthis? This whole project revolves around ownCloud and my desireto replace Dropbox with two important things:1) A much larger amount of space than the free 2 to 5 gig offeredby Dropbox, Google Drive and Skydrive. I want 100 gigs or moreWho Sings ThisAlphaville ForeverYoung Cover?Fix Your MoleskineNotepad So YouNever Have To LookFor A PenWhy ChromeBooksare a Terrible IdeaUbento_v2 – Ubuntuwith OwnCloudVersion 2Attn: Web DevelopersHTML9 ResponsiveBoilerstrap JSAVAILABLE NOW!

Iwant to host my own files. It also had to have all (or most) of the functions of Dropbox like filesync and it had to work with Windows, Linux and Mac.OwnCloudwas my solution to all of this (and more!). It is a great piece ofsoftware and the developers deserve your thanks and donationsso that they can continue to provide this great software to usunwashed masses.Ubento is basically just the Ubuntu operating system (Linux)version 12.04 (with long term support). It came out of my desire tohave my very own Linux distribution, although this is nothing of thesort since it is basically still just a customized Ubuntu. But my idealwas a version of Ubuntu with a few user-friendly tools built in. I amnot trying to create a version of Ubuntu like Mint, which isextremely use friendly. But I wanted something between Ubuntuand Mint. A good platform for Linux newcomers, with a slightlygentler learning curve than Ubuntu. So what can this image do? Ifyou download it and start it up in VMware player you can startsyncing files to it in a mater of minutes. But it does so much more!It is a full version of Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server withLAMP (which stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and Php). So it isa functioning web server with a desktop user interface. This issomewhat unusual but let me explain why. Normally, peoplehosting websites are very experienced with the Linux server andthey can do most everything by command line. If they added adesktop user interface, it would use valuable resources, memoryetc that would normally go towards hosting websites. So why does this release offer a desktop user interface? I amtrying to offer this Ubuntu + ownCloud image to people withoutextensive Linux experience.

All of that isincluded and ready to go. It doesn’t require a big set up. Justfollow a few simple steps (below) and try your hand at Linux, webdeveloping, web hosting, and ownCloud hosting.Hopefully, nowyou have a good idea of what this is and what it does but there areeven more options.Included in the files and posted here are all the steps I took tocustomize Ubuntu, install Ubuntu Server, install LAMP and installownCloud. What I don’t cover are the very basics of Linux, VMware or webhosting. I guess I assume you know these things but I will try tospeak as basically as I can when I am discussing them. Also, unless you are paying me to customize and/or troubleshoot this foryou then I have done all of this for free with free software, soplease no complaining. This is really more of a teaching tool thananything. It isn’t intended for “production”. It is more for a testingand learning environment.Ok, so now we are ready to get started. Download Ubento here:http://www.ben-costello.com/Ubuntu_12.04_v1.zipNext, download and install VMware Player:https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/5_0

Lifehacker is always a good resource for stuff like this:http://lifehacker.com/5778882/getting-started-with-linux-the-complete-guideYou may want to visit the Ubuntu site to download your ownUbuntu image or read up on Ubuntu: (although you don’t need todownload Ubuntu, as my image is an already working version ofUbuntu)http://www.ubuntu.com/And you may want to read up on ownCloud or your own version:(although you do not need to download ownCloud because myimage already contains the files)http://owncloud.org/You may also want to read up on installing ownCloud, not becauseyou have to install it yourself (again my image has an alreadyworking version of ownCloud) but you may want to read up on theinstallation of ownCloud because it will help you understand howownCloud works and it offers notes and other tips fortroubleshooting and for further customization:http://owncloud.org/support/install/Then you will want to download the client software for ownCloud, which is what syncs the files on your ownCloud server to all ofyour other computers. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux:http://owncloud.org/sync-clients/Once you start the VMware imagein VMware log in using:Username: userPassword: qwer1234Then open the web browser and browse tohttp://localhost/owncloud/

It is notimperative that you read the next few parts but in order to geteverything set up correctly all of this info will be helpful.I am sorry ifI have gone in-depth too much but I am trying to make this as userfriendly as possible. And remember if you would like for me to create one of theseVMware images for you with all custom usernames and passwordsetc or for more in-depth troubleshooting I will set things up andanswer all questions for a small fee. Also, if you like and use this image please consider donating tofund my continued development of this package. Also, considerdonating to ownCloud and Ubuntu who developed all of thissoftware for free. Please feel free to donate any amount to help future developmentof this VMware image and hopefully in the future a full Linuxdistribution. This is not in payment for any software, as it is all free, nor for any work done by Ubuntu, ownCloud and others. It is adonation to me for the work in this tutorial and the work done tocompile this VMware image. Thank you.100% Free Cloud StorageStore Your Files In The Cloud. Still hard to get things to work.Been trying to get Zentyal (Ubuntu server 12.04 LTS)SBS (gui server interface) + FreeNAS (storage) +Owncloud (storage accessible anywhere) +OpenVPN (have vmdk images, hard to get allrunning), but struggling on my own.I’m a windows tech (looking for a Win 2012 alternate)trying to figure out how seamless it is to switch myknowledge over. While I got the concepts, getting theLinux to work (with heavy leaning on Google) is noteasy.ReplyBen says:April 18, 2013 at 1:31 pmThanks for the comment. I am a Windows Techmyself but I have been forcing myself to learnLinux for a number fof reasons. But I have foundthat the experience is completely different fromthat of Windows. You can do virtually the samething but how you do it can be very different onLinux.Learning command line and many of the mostused command line statements is a good start.Did you see the link I had to Lifehacker on thispage? It is a good introduction to Linux but theyalso have some other cool tutorials. Also, I am coming out with a new VMware imagewith updated Ubuntu and OwnCloud. I am takingrequests for additional software to be added. Isthere anything you would like to see in a newimage?Good luck and come pack with anyquestions. You can also chat with me right from my blog onthe sidebar there is a chat widget.

  • 18. 6/26/13 4:39 AMUbento with ownCloud – Part 3 | Ben CostelloPage 2 of 8file:///Users/steven/Documents/Ubento%20with%20ownCloud%20–%20Part%203%20%7C%20Ben%20Costello.htmlfrom scratch (meaning just with an Ubuntu disk and the ownCloudinstall files). To install ownCloud we first need to install Ubuntu (or Ubento)Server, we are upgrading Ubuntu Desktop to Ubuntu Server withDesktop gui. I do this because this VMware image is intended forbeginners and running Ubuntu Server without the desktop gui etccan be very intimidating. These are the steps that I took to install Ubuntu Server and theLAMP server, which stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and Php.Then I unzip and configure ownCloud and then we are ready tostart hosting it.A major change I made in this ownCloud setup is that I moved theownCloud “data” directory out from inside the “www” folder whichis the web viewable directory. I did this for two reasons.1. It is more secure if it is not in the var/www directory2. I made a completely new partition “data” which can expand upto 100GB and this is where all of your ownCloud files get synched.Since it is the last partition on the Virtual HD it is also easier toexpand the HD to an even bigger size if needed. Just expand theHD size in the VMware settings hard drive utilities. Then open upgparted and unmount and expand the “data” partition. Just becareful as it is always dangerous to change a partition that youalready have files on. So maybe make a back up.And again I did this for teaching and learning purposes and Iprovide it for free (but I do welcome donations) but if you lose filesor it doesn’t work for you please do not hold me responsible orblame me.That said I would be glad to help if your post comments, questionsor suggestions on the website: ben-costello.comThis image has 2 snapshots so far. If you would like to set up theUbuntu server and ownCloud yourself, thereby setting up yourown usernames and passwords, then revert to snapshot two andset up Ubuntu Server using the following commands: (some ofthese might not be necessary but this is what worked for me)One other thing, I use the same password through out. This isobviously not safe so you should try to change as many of thesepasswords as you can. But remember if you change thepasswords on the Linux, MySQL, PhpMyAdmin side then you willWho Sings ThisAlphaville ForeverYoung Cover?Fix Your MoleskineNotepad So YouNever Have To LookFor A PenWhy ChromeBooksare a Terrible IdeaUbento_v2 – Ubuntuwith OwnCloudVersion 2Attn: Web DevelopersHTML9 ResponsiveBoilerstrap JSAVAILABLE NOW!

It will prompt youfor the following information: (I am going for the simple set up)Username: UserPassword: qwer1234Advanced->Data Folder:/media/data/owncloudDatabase user: rootDatabase password: qwer1234Database name: owncloud_12 (choose whatever you want butdon’t make it easy to guess.Database host: shouls already say: “localhost”NOW YOU ARE DONE!The only problem now is that your set up is only viewable on thisserver. Most people aren’t going to be hosting this on a real serverwith a static IP. I am guessing you are a home user hosting this on

If so then here are a few things that I cannot help youdo:1. By default I use “bridged networking” in VMware settings. Thisshould mean that your router gives out IP addresses. So first thing:find out the IP address for your Ubento Server.2. Then forward the ports 80 and 80 to your Ubento Server IP.3. I am guessing that you have a dynamic IP (one that changesfrom time to time). This will be the case for most of you who areusing a standard internet service provider and you are behind arouter. I use a service called Dynamic DNS hosted by dyndns.orgUsing this service you can sign up for a static website name (forfree but I pay $20 a year for extra features- please support themthey are a great service!)When you have signed up for their service and created your ownweb site name (ubento.dyndns.info) for example then you can usethe software ddclient to connect to your website name andconstantly update your IP address (outside – viewable to theworld, not your internal IP). ddclient is already installed but you willneed to reconfiugre it in order for it to sync with the domain name(website name) you set up through dyndns.orgJust follow the steps in “Install ddclient.txt”This will make your owncloud accessible anywhere you haveinternet. Even on iPhone, Android, Windows phone etc. It uses theWebDAV application interface so most WebDAV should work withthis. Not to mention you can just accesss your owncloud throughthe website interface without any added applications.Don’t forget that on top of syncing your IP with your dyndnswebsite name, you will also need to forward ports in your router!Next:Install ddclient – Part 3.1Please feel free to donate any amount to help future developmentof this VMware image and hopefully in the future a full Linuxdistribution. This is not in payment for any software, as it is all free, nor for any work done by Ubuntu, ownCloud and others. It is adonation to me for the work in this tutorial and the work done to
