  2. 3. A school wide initiative to help promote environmental responsibility Let’s Go Green
  3. 4. <ul><li>Involve our community in sustaining and safeguarding our environment. </li></ul>In accordance with one of ISM’s Core Beliefs:
  4. 5. <ul><li>Last December, a core body of students from across the school came together to brainstorm ways in which they could help raise awareness of the importance of environmental responsibility amongst peers in school </li></ul>How did the ‘Let’s Go Green’ campaign start?
  5. 6. <ul><li>We are a body of concerned members of the community who meet once a month to discuss ways in which we can: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>promote environmental awareness in ISM </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>encourage individuals to take steps towards reducing their carbon footprint </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Suggest initiatives that will make campus life more environmentally friendly </li></ul></ul>What is ‘The Green Group’?
  6. 7. <ul><li>Some of the steps that ISM has taken so far…. </li></ul>Did you know?…
  7. 8. <ul><li>REFLECTORS </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Lighting fixtures have been replaced to reduce energy consumption </li></ul></ul><ul><li>VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE (VFD) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This apparatus reduces the motor speed of our equipment so that consumption of power is lessened to the point that it uses only what it needs. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>TIMERS ON EXHAUST FANS (BASEMENT AREA) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>These synchronize the starting and closing of the ventilating system so that it only operates during the times it is needed. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>AIR CONDITIONERS </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Individual air conditioning units have been installed into the Board Room and 1057 so there is no need to run the chillers in order to use these rooms out of normal school hours. </li></ul></ul>Power Conversation
  8. 9. <ul><li>THROTTLING OF VALVES </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Throttling of valves in the comfort rooms from fully open to half open has reduced our water consumption in these areas by half. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>SCHEDULING OF PLANT WATERING </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Watering is limited to those times during the day when water loss through evaporation is minimal. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>WATER METERS </li></ul><ul><ul><li>These have been installed to monitor our water consumption carefully. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>REPAIRS OF LEAKS </li></ul><ul><ul><li>We have invested in finding and repairing all underground leaks in our water supply system, thus reducing water loss. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL FIELD </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The new all weather high school field has a synthetic surface which does not require watering. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Further to this, the rubber infill of the field is made from recycled tires. </li></ul></ul>Water Conservation
  9. 10. <ul><li>Recycling </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The school has a contract with a waste management company that collects all our waste, both wet and dry, ensuring that it is recycled </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Car idling policy </li></ul><ul><ul><li>All cars are required to turn off their engines whilst waiting in the car park or outside areas </li></ul></ul>Other important policies:
  10. 11. <ul><li>The green group decided that the best way to encourage change was by taking small steps... </li></ul>Inspired by the direction the school is already heading in...
  11. 12. <ul><li>The default in the NEW CANTEEN is reusable cutlery and crockery </li></ul><ul><li>The ES student council has spoken with the High School councils about the importance of setting up Recycling Boxes in classrooms. </li></ul><ul><li>Each classroom is expected to follow the green rules </li></ul>Some changes that have arisen from our ideas:
  12. 13. <ul><li>Switch off lights and aircon if you are the last person to leave the room </li></ul><ul><li>Switch off all computer monitors when not in use </li></ul><ul><li>Switch off and shut down all computers at break, at lunchtime and after school </li></ul><ul><li>Use natural light as often as possible </li></ul><ul><li>Use both sides of paper wherever possible </li></ul>The Green Rules:
  13. 14. How can the P.T.A. support this initiative?
  14. 15. <ul><li>Car pooling </li></ul><ul><li>this was suggested at our last meeting. What better way to model for our children? </li></ul><ul><li>Would it be possible to develop a list of families who would like to help reduce car usage? </li></ul><ul><li>Imagine the impact, even if it is only the morning drive; one car instead of every three… </li></ul><ul><li>It’s a start… </li></ul>A possible focus for parents:
