2. Outline-Il contesto
• The aim of this project is to develop three-
quarters who have a greater understand of
backline attack and who can apply their
individual & specialist skills in the CONTEXT
of the unit rather than in isolation.
individuali e specialistiche all’interno del
contesto di reparto piuttosto che
individualmente.
S. Aboud – July 2010

Rispetto dei tre principi
#1. Second-line formations: schieramentosu due linee
Defending a 5 vs 5 (lateral) is easier than defending a 3+2 vs 5
(channel).
#2. ‘Later is better’: in ritardo e’ meglio
The striker occupying the space after the ball is more difficult to
defend than one who occupies the space before the ball.
#3. Effective use of Linear space: usoefficacedellospazio (davanti )
The depth & angle an outhalf * receives the ball should conform to the
intended strike zone

Quale tipo d’attacco scegliere? 3 semplici criteri:
1. Simplicity(number & distance of passes)
Semplicità (numero e distanza di passaggi)
2. Efficiency(attack the closest space)
Efficacia (attaccare lo spazio + vicino)
3. Directness(engage the opp. Defence as soon as possible –

17. Defenders collectively advancing very quickly

The intention of this system is to apply pressure and force
errors in the decision making and execution of the attackers –
also potentially to stop the attackers moving the ball laterally
across the pitch
The weakness of this system due to the pace players are
running is the flexibility and balance of the defenders to adapt
to sudden changes of direction & speed of the attackers.
S. Aboud – July 2010

Attacking strategies to consider: 4
la strategia degli attaccanti da considerare è:
Avoid long passes or attempting many passes in front the defence
Evitare lungi passaggi o provare a fare molti passaggi davanti alla
difesa
Direct the attack in the 1st& 2nd zones
Dirigere l‟attacco in zona 1 e 2
Attackers should accelerate towards the oncoming defenders to deny
them time to assess & react to the attack
Utilise unmarked players (blindside wing & 15) as options off 10 & 12
OR as trailers to support strikes off 10 & 12
S. Aboud – July 2010
19. Defenders collectively advancing slowly
Difensori avanzano collettivamente lentamente
The intention of this system is to prevent being outflanked by the
attackers; this is achieved by moving up slowly (initially) , allowing
the attackers to pass the ball across the backline before accelerating
across the field to tackle the attackers while pushing them towards
the sideline
dagli attaccanti: si realizza avanzando lentamente (all‟inizio),
The weakness of this system is if defenders are checked by the
lateness of passing or effective running angles of attackers – if
players are successfully checked then they can be exposed laterally
l‟esterno S. Aboud – July 2010
20. Defenders collectively advancing slowly
Difensori avanzano collettivamente lentamente
Attacking strategies to consider:
le strategie che gli attaccanti devono considerare
Avoid early passes in front the defence;
Evitare passaggi fatti molto in anticipo davanti alla difesa
Check defenders by quick running & delayed passes – especially
the first receiver
Fissare i difensori con corsa veloce e passaggi ritardati,
specialmente il primo ricevitore
Running angles should turn targeted defenders inwards
Correre angoli interni potrebbe far girare i difensori all‟interno

22. Defenders individually advancing at different speeds
Difensori che avanzano individualmente a velocità differenti
The intention of this system is to disrupt, confuse and isolate
individual attackers; this is achieved by targeting & pressurizing
individual attackers, forcing them to hesitate, pass before checking by
advancing slowly, or tackle a player in possession by advancing
quickly.
The weakness of this system is if attackers are organised to
collectively react to individual defenders advancing at different speeds
differenti.

•Practice at the fastest speed of players
Allenare alla velocità più alta dei giocatori
•Check attackers look at defenders as long as possible before
passing & receiving a pass
•Encourage players to maintain speed of running when passing
(avoid „falling-off passes or slowing down to pass)
S. Aboud – July 2010
31. Reflect reality-Proporre la realtà
• Facilitate understanding before action (theory sessions when
appropriate)
• Facilitare la comprensione prima dell’azione (utilizzare
incontri in aula quando serve)
• Encourage players to experiment with (but facilitate) their
positioning, timing & angles of running
• Incoraggiare i giocatori a fare esperienze (ma aiutarli) nelle
posizioni, nei tempi ed angoli di corsa
• Ensure distances between units & off-side lines are accurate
• Grab-tackle ensures more commitment from defenders
• Ensure defenders ‘activate’ when the ball is in play & are not
off-side
