12 Honors Science Olympiad - Presentation Transcript

    1. Science Olympiad Division B
    2. What Is Science Olympiad?
      • Non-profit national organization
      • Let’s middle schoolers and high schoolers compete against other schools and prove their knowledge of science
      • Divides schools’ teams into groups of around 2 students to compete in specific events
      • Events can test your knowledge of a subject or let you build a project
      • Competitions offered at the invitational, regional, state, and national levels
    3. Why Do Science Olympiad?
      • Learn new things
      • Get a head start on high school Science Olympiad (Division C)
      • ***Looks good on college applications
      • Compete against other schools
      • FUN!
    4. Regional Competition Location: SUNY Potsdam Date: To Be Announced (probably around early February)

      • Balloon Launch Glider
      • Wheeled Vehicle
      • Tower Building
      • Biology/Life Sciences:
      • Heredity
      • Ecology (Forests and Marine Biology)
      • Disease Detectives
      • Don’t Bug Me
      • Anatomy (Digestive and Nervous Systems)
      • Trial Events:
      • Trajectory
      • Crave the Wave
    6. Biology/Life Sciences Heredity – Test your knowledge of genetics Ecology – Test your knowledge of different ecosystems and the environment and the way living things interact with each other (emphasis on forests and marine biology) Disease Detective – Apply your knowledge of science to a report of a disease outbreak Don’t Bug Me – Test your knowledge of bugs and insects Anatomy – Test your knowledge of the human body (emphasis on the digestive and nervous systems)
    7. Earth and Space Sciences Oceanography – Test your knowledge of the planet earth and its oceans Road Scholar – Test your ability to interpret maps Rocks and Minerals – Test your knowledge of geology given samples of rocks and minerals Meteorology – Test your knowledge of weather The Solar System – Test your knowledge of our solar system (the sun, planets, moons, comets, asteroids, meteors)
    8. Physics and Chemistry Simple Machines – Test your laboratory skills related to simple machines (levers, pulleys, wedges, screws, ramps, wheel and axel) Balloon Race – Add a weight to a Helium balloon and “race” it a certain distance Storm the Castle – Build a catapult that can throw a small object (tennis ball) as far as possible Food Chemistry – Test your knowledge of the science behind food Science Crime Busters – Identify a criminal by using forensics science techniques
    9. Mission Possible – Build a device that transfers energy from one thing to the next and complete a task (like the game “Mousetrap”) Technology Balloon Launched Glider – Build a glider that will stay in the air for as long as possible Wheeled Vehicle – Build a vehicle that moves from an elastic force (such as a rubber band) Tower Building – Build a light-weight tower out of wood that can hold a large amount of weight before breaking
    10. Write It/Do It – One student writes a description of something, and the other student tries to re-build it using these directions Inquiry Awesome Aquifers – Build a model of an “aquifer,” which is an area of ground containing water that can be pumped by a well Metric Mastery – Test your ability to estimate and your ability to measure objects using the metric system Science Word – One student describes a science word or term, while the other student guesses the word. Then, they switch jobs.
    11. Trial Events Trajectory – Build a device that can launch a ball using elastic materials Crave the Wave – Test your knowledge of waves and the way they move
    12. So get your friends together and start thinking about Science Olympiad!!!
