เรื่องของชายชาวอังกฤษที่มีหนวดเคราสีขาวสองคน โลกทัศน์หรือมุมมองทั้งหมดถูกต้องทัดเทียม

  1. 1. Brief BiographyJohn Charles Ryle (10 May 1816 – 10 June 1900) was the firstAnglican bishop of Liverpool.*Ryle was educated at Eton and at Oxford, where he was Craven Scholar in 1836.*The son of a wealthy banker, he was destined for a career in politics before choosing a pathof ordained ministry.*While hearing Ephesians 2 read in church in 1838, he was changed forever. He nowunderstood what the gospel of grace and salvation through faith in Christ alone really meant.*For 38 years he was a parish vicar; he became a leader of the evangelical party in theChurch of England.
  2. 2. Ryle on the Sovereignty of God andthe Bible.• “I cannot understand how any one can be called a believer of the Bible who deniesGods providence over this world. For my own part, I believe thoroughly that Godhas not changed. I believe that He is governing all things on earth as much now asHe was in the Old Testament days.”• “Just as the telescope and microscope show us that there is order and design in allthe works of God’s hand, from the greatest planet down to the least insect, sodoes the Bible teach us that there is wisdom, order and design in all the events ofour daily life. There is no such thing as “chance”, “luck”, or “accident” in theChristian journey through this world. All is arranged and appointed by God: and allthings are ‘working together’ for the believer’s good (Rom. 8:28).”
  3. 3. Brief BiographyCharles Robert Darwin, FRS (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was anEnglish naturalist. He established that all species of life have descendedover time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theorythat this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that hecalled natural selection.*Darwins was educated at the University of Edinburgh and then later at the University of Cambridge.*When going to Cambridge to become an Anglican clergyman, he did not doubt the literal truth of the Bible.*His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle established him as an eminent geologist whose observations and theoriessupported Charles Lyells uniformitarian ideas.*By his return he was critical of the Bible as history, and wondered why all religions should not be equally valid.*He was increasingly troubled by the problem of evil.* Many argue that he lost his faith after the death of his ten-year-old daughter
  4. 4. Darwin on the Bible and God!• “Thus disbelief {in the Bible} crept over me at a very slowrate, but was at last complete. The rate was so slow that Ifelt no distress, and have never since doubted even for asingle second that my conclusion was correct. I can indeedhardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to betrue; for if so the plain language of the text seems to showthat the men who do not believe, and this would includemy Father, Brother and almost all my best friends, will beeverlastingly punished. And this is a damnable doctrine.”
  5. 5. Similarities!• 1. Both lived in Victorian England at the same time (had the same political andsocial influences, etc.)• 2. Both received superior educations.• 3. Both experienced family deaths that impacted them greatly. (Darwin 3 children,Ryle two wives)•
