  • 1. (CBS) - Social media has been an important tool for protesters overseas. Now that the Occupy Wall Street protests have reached a tipping point, the abundance of online organizing is staggering. #OccupyWallStreet A Success (Failed) Story of Social Media
  • 2. Definisi • Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is the name given to a protest movement that began on September 17, 2011, in Zuccotti Park, located in New York City's Wall Street financial district. This date may be disputed with a likely trigger event as early as August 1, 2011, as a nude[citation needed] artist performance "Ocularpation: Wall Street" followed by arrests on Wall Street occurred while protesting American financial institutions.[7][8] • The Canadian, anti-consumerist, pro-environment group/magazine, Adbusters initiated the call for a protest. The ensuing series of events helped lead to media awareness that inspired Occupy protests and movements around the world. In awarding Workhouse its Platinum Award, industry publication PRNews noted "The results, obviously, have been spectacular. There’s hardly a newspaper, Internet or broadcast media outlet that hasn’t covered OWS."[9]
  • 4. Medium Protes #OccupyWallStreet Nadine Bloch dalam We Are Many merangkum setidaknya terdapat dua belas jenis media kultural kreatif yang digunakan dalam OWS, yaitu: 1. 2D: grafik/gambar/kata-kata: mural, banner, poster, stiker, komik, karikatur, dan logo. 2. 3D: boneka, kostum, maskot, patung, dan benda-benda lain. 3. Sound/Musik: perkusi, membuat bising, dan nyanyian. 4. Teater. 5. Gerak: tari, bela diri, jalan, pawai, dan sirkus. 6. Media/dokumentasi: video, radio, film, proyeksi, dan whistle blowing (including blog, and social media). 7. Literatur: koran, leaflet, buku, dan puisi. 8. Pemanfaatan ruang: zona demiliterisasi, taman damai, kampung damai, zona religius, dll. 9. Cultural institution building. 10. Kerajinan dan tradisi: pakaian, makanan, dll. 11. Ritual: nasional, religius, spiritual, pemakaman, dan puasa. 12. Pelestarian bahasa.
  • 5. How Occupy Wall Street is Using Social Media • CBSNews melansir berita yang menyatakan bahwasanya untuk menjaga gerakan ini tetap hidup, mereka menggunakan web dan social media. • Facebook pages have popped up for major cities across the country. Twitter hashtags have been established for communication at general assemblies. Countless videos have been posted to YouTube, Vimeo and Livestream. We found some moving personal accounts of job loss and helplessness shared on the blog, "We are the 99 percent.“ • Meetup groups have formed in 872 cities across the U.S., using the Occupy Together website as a central hub. We look forward to seeing the status updates, tweets, Instagrams...you get it.
  • 6. How Occupy Wall Street is Using Social Media • Facebook The Occupy Wall Street Facebook page currently has over 160,000 likes, and it’s growing steadily at an alarming rate. The admins of this site aren’t just posting random rants either, they’re effectively pulling on the heart strings of their target audience by posting news about location updates, links to forums, and supply needs of the protesters themselves. Through FB, they are reaching thousands of interested and/or participating U.S. citizens, and painting an overall picture that is much more compelling than a single news article or blog about the event. The Facebook movement has also splintered off into cityspecific pages as well, including Occupy Austin and Occupy San Diego.
  • 7. How Occupy Wall Street is Using Social Media • YouTube Being that YouTube is the second most popular search engine (just under Google), there’s not a better place online to post videos so the people can see what’s really going on behind the scenes. Just type “Occupy Wall Street” in YouTube’s search box and you’ll find pages and pages of videos flooding the video channel. The vids cover riots, police brutalities, and celebrity interviews about the event; again bringing the whole campaign to a reality for those who are not physically there. And considering that Google ranks web sites by YouTube videos, the massive amount of uploaded videos has only boosted search rankings for www.occupywallst.org.
  • 8. How Occupy Wall Street is Using Social Media • Twitter Hashtag “OccupyWallSt” and you’ll find thousands of tweets posted and shared by the minute. Twitter has been the leader in real-time news reports for the protest, where Twitter users can find out the latest news almost instantly about the event. Also, many major news sources such as CNN and ABC are using their Twitter accounts to update their ever-evolving stories covering Occupy Wall Street.
