For most of my adult life, I have been an active part of the Jewish community in Dallas, Texas. Recently, The Wall Street Journal featured one of our local organizations in an article on religion and finance. The WSJ profiled the Dallas Hebrew Free Loan Association (DHFLA). Since 1935, the DHFLA has followed the principles of the Torah by loaning out money without interest.

The group’s motto is “A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out.” It
operates as a microfinance institution, making small,
need-based loans for tuition, adoption, home health
care, youth experiences, and general need. Less than
1% of the borrowers default, and the returned money is
then lent out to other needy members of the Dallas
Jewish community. In today’s economy, when many
people find it difficult to get credit, the work of the DHFLA
is more important than ever. I am proud that the WSJ
chose to highlight this important Dallas institution.
