What is Field Period? <ul><li>A three credit academic course required for graduation </li></ul><ul><li>Involves a self-initiated placement, an intense learning experience, and a multi-faceted evaluation component </li></ul><ul><li>Minimum 140 hours over a 15 to 18 month time period </li></ul>

What is the purpose of Field Period? <ul><li>To offer practicing nurses the chance to: </li></ul><ul><li>Expand their current skills </li></ul><ul><li>Acquire new knowledge from another area of practice </li></ul><ul><li>Integrate this expanded practical knowledge into the theoretical understandings gained from formal theoretical learning </li></ul>

What can count for a Field Period, and how do you find one? <ul><li>Your Field Period must relate to the nursing profession </li></ul><ul><li>Your cohort manager must approve the Field Period placement </li></ul><ul><li>To find a Field Period you can: </li></ul><ul><li>Utilize contacts you have through work and/or volunteer involvement </li></ul><ul><li>Brainstorm ideas with your co-hort manager </li></ul><ul><li>Search StormTracker at </li></ul>

LEARNING GOALS: <ul><li>Are broad, global and generally aspirations for the development of new or enhanced skills, knowledge or values </li></ul><ul><li>Provide an overview for understanding the big picture of what you want to get out of Field Period </li></ul><ul><li>Should help you develop specific objectives and activities </li></ul>

Examples: <ul><li>Decide if surgical nursing is a career I want to pursue </li></ul><ul><li>Further develop my skills in geriatric nursing in order to better position myself for the job market </li></ul><ul><li>To learn the daily routine of a visiting/traveling nurse as a possible career alternative </li></ul><ul><li>Learn about hospice care nursing by working in an AIDS or terminal care environment </li></ul><ul><li>To learn about myself, both strengths and weaknesses, by working in a health care area I have very little or no previous experience in. </li></ul>

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: <ul><li>List the outcomes of your experience </li></ul><ul><li>Support your learning goals </li></ul><ul><li>Are measurable- your evaluator must be able to examine what you did and be able to determine if you accomplished them </li></ul><ul><li>Should help you describe how you will be changed by this experience </li></ul>

Examples: <ul><li>Determine the skill sets of the community-based mental health nurse </li></ul><ul><li>Identify the type of psych diagnosis, teaching, needs assessments </li></ul><ul><li>Recognize the legal/ethical aspects of community-based mental health nursing </li></ul><ul><li>Learn to develop project plan with obtainable goals and to identify and deal with potential barriers </li></ul><ul><li>Work with nursing education to assist in the development of educational materials and conduct training classes consistent with the learning styles of adults </li></ul><ul><li>Document the standardized language that will be used for documentation and collect information regarding nursing function and effectiveness </li></ul>

ACTIVITES: <ul><li>Identifies specific tasks and responsibilities you will perform </li></ul><ul><li>Support the learning objectives you have identified </li></ul><ul><li>Note: sometimes activities could change-simply communicate with your Cohort Manager to ensure that they are acceptable </li></ul>

Examples: <ul><li>Identify intake assessments and develop individual care plans as appropriate </li></ul><ul><li>Observe the inter-connective services provided and meetings as appropriate </li></ul><ul><li>Participate in group activities as appropriate </li></ul><ul><li>Research the literature regarding community based mental health </li></ul><ul><li>Research multidisciplinary language that can be incorporated into our computerized documentation system </li></ul><ul><li>Assist in development of training materials and manuals for the end users </li></ul>

Summary of procedures: <ul><li>Attend - Field Period orientation </li></ul><ul><li>Meet with Cohort Manager </li></ul><ul><li>Communicate – potential placement site </li></ul><ul><li>Design and refine – Learning Contract </li></ul><ul><li>Submit – rough draft contract to Cohort Manager for editing </li></ul><ul><li>Make – suggested changes </li></ul><ul><li>Obtain – site supervisor signature </li></ul><ul><li>Submit – complete Learning Contract (4 copies) and signed Field Period Code of Conduct </li></ul>

Summary of procedures continued: <ul><li>Obtain – Field Period packet from Cohort Manager </li></ul><ul><li>Deliver – packet to site supervisor </li></ul><ul><li>Participate – in the Field Period </li></ul><ul><li>Meet – Cohort Manager and evaluate Field Period </li></ul>For a leave of absence or change in Cohort, contact Cohort Manager, and fill out change of status form
  16. 16. Evaluation: <ul><li>Adult Learner/RN will keep a journal and write a report/summary </li></ul><ul><li>Site supervisor will complete a final evaluation and submit to the Center for Experiential Learning and student </li></ul><ul><li>One-on-one oral meeting with Cohort Manager </li></ul>

Registration & Grading: <ul><li>Students are registered for the Field Period when the final signed contract is received and filed with the Center for Experiential Learning </li></ul><ul><li>The credit hours will be billed at the same time as your final Nursing course in this program </li></ul><ul><li>Field Periods are graded Pass/Fail </li></ul>
