Care Team Providers • As of July 1st, there are three dental residents working with the program • Dental Coordinator/Assistant (.75 FTE) • Dental Hygenist – trialed, may need additional dental assistant to support or separate day • Plan moving forward --- continue with current pilot and expand services • Continue with education of staff
  3. 3. Frequency of Visits • The dental team visits twice a month for one full day at Parkridge and Sherbrooke Community Centre. • Assessments started in February • Treatment started in April
  4. 4. Assessments • Assessments have been done on over 260 residents. – 40% of residents at Sherbrooke – 76% of residents at Parkridge • 30% of residents who were assessed have consented to treatment • Residents with emergent concerns as identified by the nursing staff are prioritized • Includes residents who have receiving care elsewhere – Convenience of on site care
  5. 5. Treatment Provided • 35 residents treated – 18% only required 1 appointment – 82% required 2 or 3 appointments to complete the treatment • Treatments delivered include: – dental cleanings – x-rays – Fillings – Only one extraction has been done on site.

Education Provided • In-services provided to each home by Saskatoon Health Region Dental Health Educators • Typically nursing staff in attendance – open to other care team members • Target is care providers who typically support oral hygiene • Topics • Parkridge 2, Sherbrooke 1 • Observation … appears to be new information to care providers

Survey – Resident & Family • Survey to all resident neighbourhoods at Parkridge (237) • Mailed to family members • 33 surveys returned (29 by family, 4 by residents) • 2 respondents indicated not enough oral care provided in home • 3 residents indicated the do their own mouth care • 50 % of family indicated they would be willing to help out with mouth care if shown how • 33% family indicated they help out with oral care when visiting

In the process of working out a schedule with a hygienist. • Delay in treatments provided as the coordinator was away for through the summer. Treatments resumed September 26th. • Exploring modification of Australian Method to implement in long term care (includes train the trainer program)
