      • Asya In that
      • Mukti daayakam Sacred and fulfilling
      • Kaasee Kshaetram pious city of Varanasi,
      • Kadaachin once upon a time
      • Satyaacharya a sacred & learned man
      • Gamane was on a stroll.
      • Prati Opposite to (the man)
      • Maargae tu on that very street
      • Saha Gourya along with Gouri devi
      • Sankaram Lord Sankara (had come)
    8. One day in Varanaasi
      • Once, a great godly man is on a stroll in the famous, heavenly place–the Varanaasi
      • During his walk after his ritualistic, sacred and purified bath he came juxtaposed to
      • two people – a man and his consort walking opposite to him almost bumping into his way.
      • The strange couple were none other than The LORD SIVA and PARVATHI.
    9. అన్త్య వేషధరం దృష్ట్వా గచ్ఛ గచ్ఛేతి చాబ్రవీత్ , శంకరశ్యోపి చండాలః తమ్ పునః ప్రాహ శంకరమ్ , Antya vaeshadharam drushtwaa gachcha gachchaeti cha abraveet, Sankarah so api chandaalah tam punah praaha Sankaram, ప్రాహ శంకరమ్

      • Drustwa On seeing
      • Vaesha dharam the couple in the attire of
      • Antya a downtrodden family,
      • Abraveet uttered (the learned man)
      • Gachcha Get away.. You….
      • Cha also ….(scornfully)
      • Gachchaeti Get away.. etc.,
      • Sankarah so api Even though he is Lord Siva
      • Chandaalah in disguise of the downtrodden
      • Tam to that learned man
      • Sankaram The Lord Sankara
      • Punah praaha In reply said as follows….
    11. Go Away, Go Away
      • The couple is in the disguise of a lowly placed and unkempt downtrodden family
      • This learned and holy man, though very well versed in Atma Jnaana, not recognizing the true nature of the persons coming into him
      • uttered the words, you…. Go away, Go away, Go aloof - in some form of scorn and hatred
      • Then, Parama Siva in the chandaala roopam replied to the learned man as follows…
    12. అన్నమాయాదన్నమయమ్ అథవా చైతన్యమేవ చైతన్యాత్ యతివర దూరీ కర్తుం వాంఛసి కిమ్ బ్రూహి గచ్ఛ గచ్ఛేతి ? Annamaayaad annamayam athavaa chaitanyam yaeva chaitanyaat yativara dooree kartum vaanchasi kim broohi gachcha gachchaeti ? కిమ్ బ్రూహి గచ్ఛ గచ్ఛేతి

      • Dooree kartum keep at a distance, keep aloof ?
      • Annamayaad Is it my body made from food, it is
      • Annamayam same as yours nourished by food
      • Atha vaa if not, perhaps if it is
      • Chaitanyam the inner sentient energy in me
      • Yaeva it is also the
      • Chaitanyaat same as your inner sentient energy
    14. Sir, Whom are you hating ?
      • Lord Parama Siva spoke as follows
      • Oh ! The perfect man of Self realization -
      • Sir, I wish to know, whom are you addressing to get away from your esteemed presence out of hatred ?
      • Do you mean the physical body of us – it’s one and the same for all !!
      • If you mean the internal cosmic energy within us, it’s all the more same in all !
    15. ప్రత్యగ్వస్తుని నిస్తరంగ సహజ ఆనందావబోధాంబుధౌ విప్రో అయం స్వపచో అయమిత్యపి మహాన్ కో అయం విభేద భ్రమః pratyagvastuni nistaranga sahaja ananda avabodha ambudhou vipro ayam swapacho ayamity api mahaan ko ayam vibhaeda bhramah ? కో అయం విభేద భ్రమః

      • Ayam Vipro You are learned indeed. You have
      • Avabodha the perfect understanding about
      • Pratyag Vastuni the indwelling essence of us and
      • Nistaranga (You are) the waveless steady
      • Ambudhou ocean called the
      • Sahaja Ananda innate, natural Bliss Absolute and
      • Swa pacho a man of self help (Self made)
      • Mahaan O! Great soul
      • Ayam ity api Alas! For You too sir,
      • Ko why is
      • Ayam this very hatred and
      • Vibhedha bramah this illusion of discrimination ??
    17. For You too Sir, This Difference
      • The Parama Siva continues his query
      • Respected Sir, You have experienced the Pratyag aatma (our inner consciousness) by your tremendous power of evolution.
      • You are self contented and self made
      • You are drenched in the steady nectarine ocean of the Eternal Bliss Absolute !!
      • You too suffer from this illusion of discrimination!
      • Alas! You too have this untouchability !!!
    18. కిమ్ గంగాంబుధి బింబితేంబర మణౌ చన్డాల వీధీ పయః పూరే వా అన్తరమస్తి కాంచన ఘటీ మృత్కుమ్భయొర్వాంబరే ? kim gangaambudhi binbitae ambara manou chandaala veedhee payah poorae vaa antaramasti kaanchana ghatee mritkumbhayorva ambarae? కిమ్ అన్తరమస్తి

      • Ganga ambudi Be it in the sacred water of Ganges
      • Payah poorae vaa or in the cesspools situated in
      • Chandaala veedhi the slum dwellers’ lanes,
      • bimbita in reflected and shining
      • Ambara manou Sun, the jewel of the sky,
      • Kim antaram what difference
      • Asthi does exist ?
      • Kaanchana ghatee Be it a golden vessel
      • Mrit kumbha yor vaa or be an earthen pot,
      • Ambarae in the reflected sky
      • Kim vaa antaram what difference
      • Asthi does exist !!
    20. What is the difference ?
      • The precious jewel of the sky, the Sun
      • Isn’t he shining in the same way in this very sacred and holy water of this river - the mother Ganges
      • and in the polluted cesspools in the dirty lanes of the slum dwellers ?
      • Will the reflected sky be inferior in an earthen pot, compared to the one in a golden vessel !
    21. The Five Golden Instructions
      • The Lord, after those piercing arrows of questions shot at that wise man
      • Now, professes the Great Supreme Reality of Oneness in the next five gems (slokas)
      • These are known as “Maneesha Panchakam”
    22. జాగ్రత్ స్వప్న సుషుప్తిషు స్ఫుటతరా యా సం విదుజ్జృంభతే యా బ్రహ్మాది పిపీలికాంత తనుషు ప్రోతా జగత్సాక్షిణీ , సైవాహం న చ దృశ్య వస్త్వితి ధృఢ ప్రఙ్ఞాపి యశ్యాస్తిచేత్ చండాలోస్తు సతు ద్విజోస్తు గురురిత్యేషా మనీషా మమ . jaagratswapna sushuptishu sphutataraa yaa sam vidujjrimbhatae yaa brahmaadi pipeelika anta thanushu prothaa jagat saakshinee, saiva aham na cha drisya vastwiti drudha prajnaapi yasya asti chaet chandaalostu sa tu dwijosthu gurur ityaeshaa maneeshaa mama. గురురిత్యేషా మనీషా మమ
    23. Interpretation
      • Jaagrat In the wakeful state,
      • swapna in dreaming state and
      • Sushupti shu also in the deep sleep state
      • Sputa taraa that which very clearly
      • Jrumbhatae shines in all beings and
      • Sam vidu perfectly knows every thing;
      • Yaa That which
      • Protaa nurtures and safe guards
      • Brahma adi from the Creator onwards
      • Pipeelika anta up to the ant,
      • Thanu shu all living bodies and
      • saakshinee which is the witness
      • Jagat for all worldly activity;
    24. Interpretation
      • Sa yaeva aham And that which is
      • Na cha drusya not to be perceived by us
      • Vastvu iti as an object to be -
      • Api drudha in spite of firm knowledge
      • Prajnaa of material things;
      • Chandaalo In the down trodden (it)
      • Asthu very much exists
      • Sa tu in the same way as
      • Asthu it exists
      • Dwijo in the learned and wise men.
      • Gurur iti yaesha The greatest reality of
      • Maneesha mama My (lord Siva’s) chaitanya
      • Asthi chaeth remains verily the same!!
    25. Supreme is My inner power !!
      • Oh Man! Learn - this Self with in - My reflection
      • It is distinctly shining with in all the three states; namely the wakeful, the dreaming and the deep sleep states
      • It is the invisible thread and witness within all from the Creator up to the tiny ant
      • It is not a cognizable object in spite of any amount of material intelligence
      • Isn’t it, My power, very much the same in one and all irrespective of any caste, creed or kind !
      • Yes, very much It is !!
    26. బ్రహ్మైవాహమిదమ్ జగచ్ఛ సకలం చిన్మాత్ర విస్తారితమ్ సర్వం చైతదవిద్యయా త్రిగుణయా శేషమ్ మయా కల్పితం , ఇథ్థం యస్య దృఢ మతిస్సుఖతరే నిత్యే పరే నిర్మలేః చండాలోస్తు సతు ద్విజోస్తు గురురిత్యేషా మనీషా మమ . Brahmaiva aham idam jagachcha sakalam chinmaatra vistaaritam sarwam chait avidyayaa trigunayaa saesham mayaa kalpitam, iththam yasya dridha matis sukhatarae nityae parae nirmalaeh chandaalostu satu dwijostu gurur ityaeshaa maneeshaa mama. గురురిత్యేషా మనీషా మమ
    27. Interpretation
      • Aham I am the
      • Brahmaiva Brahman indeed and
      • Idam Jagat cha (I am) this very universe too.
      • Sakalam In every thing (I am)
      • Chin maatra the subtle conscious form
      • Vistharitam perfectly unfolding myself.
      • Sarwam chait All this sentient world
      • Avidyayaa borne of nescience
      • Thrigunayaa by the play of three gunas
      • Sesham remains as seen but (it is)
      • Kalipitam created by
      • Mayaa My (lord’s) will and pleasure
    28. Interpretation
      • Yasya Whosoever, (he may be)
      • Dhruda matih that person of firm conviction
      • Iththam who understands this subtlety
      • Nityae resides permanently in the
      • Parae Supreme (superlative)
      • Nirmale uncontaminated (taintless)
      • Sukhatarae the extreme Bliss.
      • Chandaalo In the down trodden (I)
      • Asthu very much exist
      • Sa tu in the same way as
      • Asthu (I) exist
      • Dwijo in the learned and wise men.
      • Gurur iti yaesha The greatest reality of
      • Maneesha mama My (lord Siva’s) chaitanya
      • Asthi chaeth remains verily the same!!
    29. Supreme is My inner power !!
      • Oh Man! Learn – I am verily the Brahman. I am this entire universe too. I am the subtle consciousness in every thing, perfectly unfolding Myself.
      • All this sentient world is borne of nescience with the interplay of the three gunas and is apparently seen, but it is created by Me at my will and pleasure.
      • Whosoever understands this subtlety with firm conviction of mind, he ever remains seated in the Supreme, untainted, unending Bliss Absolute.
      • Isn’t it, My power, very much the same in one and all - irrespective of any caste, creed or kind !
      • Yes, very much It is !!
    30. శశ్వన్ నశ్వరమేవ విశ్వమఖిలమ్ నిశ్చిత్య వాచా గురోర్ నిత్యం బ్రహ్మ నిరన్తరం విమృశతా నిర్వ్యాజ శాన్తాత్మనా , భూతం భావిచ దుష్కృతమ్ ప్రదహతా సంవిన్మయే పావకే ప్రారబ్దాయ సమర్పితం స్వవపుర్ ఇత్యేషా మనీషా మమ saswan naswaram yaeva viswam akhilam nischitya vaachaa guror nityam brahma nirantaram vimrisataa nirwyaaja saanta atmanaa, bhootam bhaavi cha dushkritam pradahataa samvinmayae paavakae praarabdhaaya samarpitam swavapur ityaeshaa maneeshaa mama. గురురిత్యేషా మనీషా మమ
    31. Interpretation
      • Viswam akhilam Even if this whole universe
      • Naswaram is annulled and destroyed,
      • Saswat It (my power) is ever permanent.
      • Nischitya Decisively,
      • vaacha to say in one word,
      • Guror It (my power in all) is the greatest!
      • Vimrusataa If one analyzes carefully with
      • Nirvyaaja an untainted, unaffected
      • Santa atmanaa peaceful and tranquil intelligence,
      • Brahma This power of mine, the Brahman is
      • Nityam ever permanent and ever lasting and
      • Nirantaram (it) is undifferentiated and peerless;
    32. Interpretation
      • Dushkritam All the sinful deeds (yet to come)
      • Bhaavi in future (and present too) and
      • Bhootam cha also those committed in the past,
      • Pavakae like the flaming fire, (the Brahman)
      • Pradahdataa perfectly reduces them to ashes
      • samvinmayae being the very form of time or Kaala.
      • Swa vapur iti The physical (differences in) bodies
      • Samarpitam are caused (and are apparent)
      • Prarabdaaya by the imprints of yester deeds (sins)
      • Yaesha maneesha This consciousness within all
      • Mama the inner power given by me
      • Gurur is the greatest of all and in all !!
    33. Supreme is My inner power !!
      • Oh Man! Learn – Even when the whole universe is destroyed, my power ever remains permanent. To say decisively in one word, The Brahman is the Greatest !
      • If one analyzes carefully with an untainted and tranquil intelligence, this power of mine is ever permanent and is undifferentiated and peerless.
      • All the sinful deeds of the past, present and future are perfectly reduced to ash, just like by a flaming fire, by my very power called the time or Kaala.
      • The so called physical differences in the bodies are caused the by the imprints (vasanas) of your yester deeds.
      • This consciousness within all, the inner power given by me, is the greatest of all and in all !!
    34. యా తిర్యఙ్నర దేవతాభిరహమిత్యంత స్ఫుటా గృహ్యతే యద్భాసా హృదయాక్ష దేహవిషయా భాన్తి స్వతో చేతనాః , తామ్ భాశ్యైః పిహితార్కమండల నిభాం స్ఫూర్తిం సదా భావయన్ యొగీ నిర్వృత మానసో హి గురురిత్యేషా మనీషా మమ . yaa tiryag nara daevata abhir aham ityamta sphutaa grihyatae yadbhaasaa hridayaaksha daehavishayaa bhaanti swato chaetanaah, taam bhaasyaih pihita arkamandala nibhaam sphoortim sadaa bhaavayan yogee nirvrita maanaso hi gurur ityaeshaa maneeshaa mama. గురురిత్యేషా మనీషా మమ

      • Thiryagn Animals (horizontal while walking),
      • Nara People (Homo erectus) - bipeds
      • Daevata (and) Divine beings –
      • Abhir all of the above said
      • Grihyatae are seized (possessed)
      • Yaa aham by which power of mine
      • Sputaa very distinctly and
      • Ityanta in the most fascinating way;
      • Yad bhaasa By whose effulgence,
      • Hridaya with the mind
      • Aksha with the eyes
      • Daeha with the body
      • Vishaya the worldly objects
      • Bhanti are perceived and illuminated;
      • Swato By itself (which) is the
      • Chaetanaa the core consciousness
    36. Interpretation
      • Taam bhaasyaih That which illuminates all
      • pihita beings and things equally -
      • Arka mandala like the single SUN
      • nibhaam illuminating all things in the universe;
      • Yogee The perfect men of wisdom
      • Nirwrita relentlessly
      • Manaso hi with their consciousness and
      • Spoorthim with full knowledge
      • Sadaa bhaavayan ever contemplate on (that very Atman);
      • Yaesha maneesha This consciousness within all
      • Mama the inner power given by me
      • Gurur is the greatest of all and in all !!
    37. Supreme is My inner power !!
      • That the inner SELF or the ‘I’ is the one which shines in all the animals, humans & the divine alike
      • Whose inner sentient energy is responsible for the cognitive perceptions of the world of objects by the body, eyes and mind
      • This single entity illuminates all alike just as one single SUN is ever the source of light to each and every object
      • That which the yogis ever relentlessly perceive
      • This consciousness within all, the inner power given by me, is the greatest of all and in all !!
    38. యత్సౌఖ్యాంబుధి లేశ లేశత ఇమే శక్రాదయో నిర్వృతా యచ్చిత్తే నితరాం ప్రశాంత కలనే లబ్ద్వా మునిర్నిర్వృతః , యస్మిన్ నిత్యసుఖాంబుధౌ గలిత ధీర్ బహ్మైవ న బ్రహ్మవిత్ యః కశ్చిత్ స సురేన్ద్ర వందిత పదో నూనం మనీషా మమ . yat soukhyaambudhi laesalaesata imae sakraadayo nirwritaa yachchittae nitaraam prasaanta kalanae labdhwaa munir nirwritah, yasmin nityasukha ambudhou galita dheer bahmaiva na brahmavi dyah kaschit sa suraendra vandita pado noonam maneeshaa mama. నూనం మనీషా మమ
      • Even the heavenly beings such as Indra know this ocean of happiness only a little, a little bit
      • The sages secured this unrelenting state by none other than their perfectly calm devotion
      • Which is, but nothing else, termed as the Brahma, the Bliss Eternal by the most learned
      • That which is revered by all virtuous souls
      • That state is incomparable and ever greater
      • Isn’t it the same in one and all irrespective of any caste, creed or kind ! Yes, very much It is !!
      The SELF is the Ultimate
    39. The perfect Realization
      • Thus after this perfect instruction about the Atma Jnaana and the shock treatment rendered to him
      • The holy man experienced and perfectly understood - what is real and what is unreal
      • Surrendered his ego before the feet of the Supreme Consciousness (SIVA)
      • Instantaneously, he could visualize the almighty
      • Parama Siva and Parvathi in front of him.
      • From that very moment he perceived GOD in all
