Question 3: What kind of mediainstitution might distribute your media product and why? Sarah Walsh
The Production ProcessThe following stages state the process magazines gothrough:1. Magazine ideas (style of magazine, genre of magazine, target audience)2. Research into similar products (choose features you like and dislike, analyse their layout and audience)3. Produce flat plans (rough first idea of plan for magazine)4. Construct the magazine using media software like Photoshop and InDesign5. Distribute the magazine to their target audience
PublishingMy target audience for my magazine of ‘indie scenesters’is similar to Kerrang! and Rock Sound’s target audience soI would publish my magazine in similar places as theseprofessional magazines. These magazines have a nichetarget audience of only a certain group of people, however there are a lot of people who buy thesemagazines so they are published as a mainstreamproduct. Therefore my magazine would also be publishedas a mainstream product through media publishers likeBauer Media who produce magazines like Kerrang! and Q.These magazines are sold in shops like WHSmith , HMVand major supermarkets so my magazine would also bepublished in the same places.
Who Would Distribute? My magazine is largely similar to Kerrang! magazine as ithas the same target audience and genre and I wasinfluenced by features in Kerrang! magazine whenproducing my magazine. Bauer Media distribute Kerrang!magazine so I would try to get my magazine distributedalso by this media group as it already has experience andknowledge in distributing lots of mainstream magazinesranging from fashion magazines to music magazines. Theycould use their techniques from distributing thesemagazines, especially Kerrang! magazine whendistributing my magazine as it would be distributed insimilar places as Kerrang! as they follow a similar genreand target audience.
Advertising My MagazineThere is now a wider range of advertising opportunities due to Web 2.0 whichis an advantage for me when advertising my magazine. Kerrang! and RockSound magazine are advertised through social networking sites like Facebookand Twitter as they are currently the most popular sites used by their targetaudience and this is a free method of advertising. As my magazine is for asimilar target audience to these magazines I will advertise my magazine in thesame way as this as it is proven to be successful. Kerrang! also have a TVmusic channel and radio channel so their magazine is advertised through this.As Kerrang! magazine and my magazine will both be distributed throughBauer Media and they are both of similar genres then Kerrang! magazinecould include advertisements for my magazine as the target audience readingKerrang! may be interested in reading my magazine as it will contain similarcontent. I could also advertise my magazine through TV adverts in thecommercial breaks between TV music channels of the same genre of mymagazine like Kerrang! And Scuzz.
Distributing My MagazineAs I am distributing my magazine to a mainstreammarket, I will need to distribute it to mainstream shops somy target audience will be able to find and purchase it. Iwill distribute it to shops like WHSmith, majorsupermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Tesco and HMV as thisis a music store so music fans will be able to purchase mymusic magazine. I will also give the option for customersto subscribe to my magazine so they will receive everyissue of the magazine to their door before every one elseat a cheaper price of purchasing each magazineseperatley and a free gift will also be given to encouragecustomers to go ahead with this purchasing option.
