Yes, that is definetly an advantage of having an open ePortfolio. I would hope that it would start up all sorts of discussions between practititoners and consumers. The only downside (depending on your point of view) is that a ’rate your midwife’ situation may occur. Now, this may be fair enough but it could also turn nasty too. What do you think?

Hi Sarah, would prospective clients of a midwife have access to an eportfolio? It would possibly make choosing a midwife easier and more informed.

@easegill We haven’t seen any evidence come out of New Zealand yet, but then again it’s early days. What will be difficult for us to tease out is what affects practice: the portfolio or the Standards Review

Do you believe that keeping the portfolio has made you reflect more on what went well and what didn’t during the year? Going through the analysis of these things should embed your solutions a lot more compared to just thinking ’I better not do it that way next time’. Health has been a strong area for promoting reflective practice, partly I think, because it is difficult to have peer evaluation.

The other point that is made in your preso is that peer and user feedback required. Getting a different perspective on events should also help your analysis or evaluation.
You will be more aware than me of research in NZ or international context for midwifery portfolios!
Of course, if process is viewed as hoop jumping by participants then less likely to have positive effect.

What I want to know, though, easegil, is what evidence there is that having an eportfolio will make me a better midwife

Thanks a lot, easegill. The question is: what research is there out there that supports ePortfolios. I have to have a portfolio as a midwife in New Zealand, but I haven’t seen any evidence from NZ that says that having a portfolio, e or otherwise, makes me a better midwife.

Great summation of an eportfolio in practice.
