Good slide show Sarah. I totally agree that the success or failure of initiatives is reliant on ownership by the participants and this has to come from them, it takes time. One or two take up an initiative and share their experience with others in their circle, gradually more and more will become interested and take it up. If there is value to the community eventually a critical mass will develop and the initiative then becomes part of normal practice and expectations. The thing is for those early adopters to hang in and not give up. Keep at it and keep telling others about it. For a researcher on a time frame this must be very frustrating.

Thank you very much for your comment. I don't know how well I got it over without sounding white, middle class and judgmental. The point is: The women of Gisborne were/are wonderful and they taught me to re-evaluate who/what I am. I will always be grateful for that.

Hi Sarah, Thanks for sharing your life as a midwife in Gisy. Just a thought to share from me to non-Maori. What is considered poor to you may not necessarily be poor to me? We were, are and will always be the creators of our own destiny.
