This presentation was given on Thursday, April 21, 2011, as part of the free monthly webinar series from Friends for Youth's Mentoring Institute.

In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, this bonus presentation will focus on one of the recommended tools and approaches in screening and assessing volunteers. Just like all youth-serving organizations, mentoring organizations are targets for people who cross sexual boundaries or are a sexual risk to children and teens. Even organizations knowledgeable about child sexual abuse and preventative measures are vulnerable. This webinar will examine a new online screening tool, The Diana Screen, which has proven effective at screening the general population to identify individuals who are a sexual risk to children and teens and which can be used to screen mentor volunteers. The experiences and dilemmas of Friends for Youth, the first mentoring organization to use The Diana Screen, will also be discussed, along with the research results of a pilot study.

We’re fortunate to be joined by Whitney Gabriel, J.D., for this presentation. Whitney is the National Director of Child Safety for Abel Screening, Inc. She is also a board member and formerly served as executive director of the Child Molestation Research & Prevention Institute. Previously, Gabriel was executive director of Women Defenders, a nonprofit organization for female criminal defense attorneys in California. A member of the State Bar of California, Gabriel formerly represented plaintiffs in employment-related discrimination and harassment lawsuits. Rebecca Duran, Friends for Youth’s Program Manager, will also join in the discussion to talk about our program’s experience using The Diana Screen over the past year.
