The devil made me do it is a mixed documentary, as it
uses a narrative voice over which gives a ‘voice of
God’ impression.
The Documentary uses interviews, observation and
narration which together make the mixed
documentary.

• The themes in the documentary consisted:

Murder
Music Industry- Marilyn Manson
Religion
Absence of parents
4. Narrative structure
• The Narrative structure was of a circular narrative
which means that it started at the end and goes
back to the beginning and then too the end again.
In The Devil Made Me Do It the documentary
begins with the murder of the nun and then goes
back to beginning of what happened and how she
was murdered and then to the end where the girls
are sentenced.
5. Camera work
There is hand held camera work when they are
filming in a car.
There is a frequent use of medium close ups of
people when they are speaking.
There is a use of rule of thirds shots in the interviews
with various people in the documentary such as
Marilyn Manson.
There is a long shot showing the town.
6. Mise en scene
• There is low key lighting when talking with Marilyn
Manson backstage.
• There are reconstructions of what has happened in
the same place.
• There is religious paraphernalia such crosses.
7. Sound
• There is a frequent use of Marilyn Manson songs as
he is being investigated, to see if his music
influenced the girls to commit the crime.
• There is dialogue used through the narrative voice
over and interviews.
• There is live audio and screaming fans at the Marilyn
Manson performance.
