  • Organizations of all types trust ASE for mission-critical OLTP systems. Sybase is recognized as a leader in data-driven industries including healthcare, financial services, telecommunications, and government. One healthcare customer tells us that Sybase ASE is 30-40% faster than the alternative RDBMS they tested. Over 50% of trades on Wall Street rely on Sybase database; with our top customers supporting up to 2 million transactions per minute in their trading applications. One of our telecommunications customer’s OLTP application running on Sybase ASE is handling up to 1B transactions per day.Bombay Stock Exchange processes 4 million trades per day, networked to 400 citiesIndian Railways executes 16 million transactions per day BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee scales to 5 terabytes of data with 3,200 concurrent users per day
  • Formed in 1984, Sybase’s leadership the database management market, is a direct result of ASE’s ability to address these extreme requirements by delivering ultra-fast, nonstop performance on cost-effective, standards-based platforms. Sybase was the first to market with a client/server relational database. In May 1987, Sybase formally released the SYBASE system, the first high-performance RDBMS for online applications. Rather than having a vast central bank of data stored in a large mainframe computer, the SYBASE System provided for a client/server computer architecture. At the time, Sybase called the database server "Sybase SQL Server" and later made a deal with Microsoft to share the source code for Microsoft to remarket on the Windows platform as "SQL Server". Until version 4.9, Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server were virtually identical. Due to disagreements between the two companies over revenue sharing (or lack thereof), Sybase and Microsoft decided to split the code-lines and went their own way, although the shared heritage is very evident in the Transact-SQL (T-SQL) procedural language as well as the basic process architecture. The big difference is that Sybase has a Unix heritage, while Microsoft SQL Server was adapted and optimized only for the Microsoft Windows NToperating system. Sybase continued to offer versions for Windows, several varieties of Unix, and for Linux. Sybase called their version Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), while Microsoft continued to use SQL Server name.Over the next 20 years, Sybase ASE became the dominant RDBMS in the financial industry, a position it still enjoys. Major industry analyst firms have recognized Sybase’s leadership position such as in the 2009 Forrester Wave Report, and Waters names Sybase ASE as the best enterprise data management vendor on Wall Street.
  • How do Sybase ASE’s capabilities meet the extreme data challenge? We’ll cover these capabilities in four areas:(CLICK) Achieving High Performance and Scalability (CLICK) Reducing Operational Risks (CLICK) Improving Efficiency and Resource Utilization (CLICK) and Lowering IT Costs  (CLICK) Let’s start with talking about how Sybase ASE achieves high performance and scalability. (CLICK) Sybase ASE enables demanding IT environments to achieve millions of transactions per minute with terabyte-sized databases, (CLICK) while maintaining rapid growth rates in data and transaction volume. .
  • Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise is truly architected for performance. (CLICK) It runs as an application on top of the OS with minimal dependence on the OS to function. ASE performs all of its process scheduling, I/O scheduling, thread management, and security mechanisms internally – (CLICK) easing the burden on the operating system itself and, therefore, requires less overheadand less tuningfrom the underlying OS. This is different from many other database vendors, and helps to ensure high performance. (CLICK) ASE allows hundreds of thousands of concurrent users and millions of transactions per second with terabyte-sized databases.
  • Sybase ASE data encryption and security technology options protect data from both internal and external security breaches allowing you to keep your data secure at all times – whether in transit, when accessed, or while at rest. (CLICK) Sybase ASE’s Encryption capabilities enable administrators to protect sensitive data on disk without performance impact and without exposing encryption keys. (CLICK) ASE’s Security and Directory Services capabilities protects data from any unauthorized access. It ensures data privacy through row-based access controls, the encryption of in-transit data, and support for LDAP and Active Directory services.
  • Optimized for SAP ApplicationsWith SAP Sybase ASE powering yourSAP Business Suite applications, you canbenefit from software and a databasethat have been jointly developed, tested, and tuned to work smoothly together. Each and every release is assured to beoptimized and production ready. Implementationis straightforward with automatedsetup and configuration of thedatabase and application. A databaseadministrator cockpit – a single interfacefor managing both application and database– reduces the complexity of runningyour systems and allows you to keep awatchful eye on all your application anddatabase operations. In addition, SAPSybase ASE provides optimized integrationwith other SAP solutions and technologieslike the SAP HANA® platform, allowing you to transform existing businessprocesses with game-changingapplications that leverage the powerof in-memory computing. And thanks to SAP Rapid Deployment
  • Collection of historic and current data of the system status is done via DBA Cockpit generated SQLqueries based on the metadata model. DBACockpit generates monitoring screens to present thedata to the user.Data extraction for the DB Performance Warehouse is based on the same set of data in thesaptools database.
