How Evolving Tech Landscape Will Impact IT Platform Strategy in 2014

  1. 1. EXPLORING THE PLATFORM LANDSCAPE How Predicted Trends for 2014 Will Affect IT Business Strategy Initiatives
  2. 2. A NEW ERA FOR IT PROFESSIONALS It’s no longer about saving your workforce from its day-to-day technical issues. The data explosion that only IT can wrangle has pushed this group into the forefront, tasked with transforming the business for the digital age. This shift demands that IT enables the business to compete in real time by architecting an infrastructure that links together systems for an integrated, secure path forward and brings together transactions and analytics on one platform. Out of 600 CIOs and IT professionals surveyed, only 39% feel the data they generate is relevant to their business strategies. Only 50% say their data is consistent, accurate, formatted, and complete.1 1 TechJournal, “Weak Analytics Capabilities Hinders Decision-Making,” March 5, 2013 2
  3. 3. A NEW WORLD FOR DATA INITIATIVES IN THE NEW YEAR The new year is a time to tackle the challenges affecting so many data initiatives: • Storage capacity, data sharing, and server efficiency issues • Overloaded infrastructure from influx of digital-savvy customers • Traditional analytics that can’t handle real-time insights from social media The International Data Corporation (IDC) believes the “3rd Platform” is where IT must focus to improve business strategy and common technology struggles. This platform contains: • Mobile devices and apps • Cloud services • Big Data analytics • Social technologies 3
  4. 4. DATA GETS PERSONAL Companies no longer can afford to “go with their gut instinct.” Rather, data-driven decisions are essential to move forward with confidence. IT departments need to not only make sense of the data overload but also build an infrastructure that creates a safe, intuitive ecosystem for data analysis and retrieval. Platform as a Service (PaaS) technologies will be critical for companies wanting data analytics advantages. 4
  5. 5. PLATFORM TECHNOLOGIES GET VALIDATED IN 2014 Cloud spending will grow a remarkable 25%, reaching over $100 billion.2 With this prediction that the cloud will go mainstream, it’s evident that many organizations are moving to PaaS technologies such as in-memory capabilities. While many PaaS technologies were in infancy a few years ago, it’s now no longer about early adopters. The technology’s ability to accelerate development efforts and absorb platform maintenance and infrastructure headaches will free up IT resources for more strategic focuses. International Data Corporation, “IDC Predictions 2014: Battles for Dominance – dand Survival – on the 3rd Platform” 2 5
  6. 6. LAYING THE FOUNDATION It’s up to you to align the people, processes, and technology by shifting how you think about your job as an enabler to one that empowers your business users. And it can begin by laying the proper technological foundation for your business. There has been too much noise and too many platform players for companies to make sense of platform providers. As intense competition plays out this year, look carefully for emerging leaders and much-needed standardization across offerings and start identifying sound technology partners. 6
  7. 7. NEW PARTNERSHIPS WILL EMERGE Platform technology, like in-memory, enables once siloed organizations to bring together unique data points that further change how IT enables the business to use and gather data. ALWAYS ON. Fast data exploration and query and analysis capabilities will evolve with new partnerships. The ability for users to share and collaborate, as well as collect and analyze operational data in real time, will be enhanced. TEAM SPORT. Similar to Amazon’s new partnership with the United States Postal Service, the ability for once isolated organizations to come together and securely share unique data points will revolutionize insights across industries. ACCESS ANYWHERE. Organizations are on the move, and for some industries, the concept of an office is really wherever one’s smartphone or tablet resides. Easy, secure access to data will strengthen your ability to make smarter ad hoc decisions. To reach 30 billion autonomously connected endpoints and $8.9 trillion in revenue by 2020, coordination and collaboration will be required.3 3 International Data Corporation, “IDC Predictions 2014: Battles for Dominance – and Survival – on the 3rd Platform” 7
  8. 8. EASY ADOPTION CRITICAL FOR SUCCESS The quest for data-driven insights can either be halted or transformed by the explosion of mobile devices, apps, social media, and cloud services. These four technologies and their growing impact on IT must be realized before progress can be made. Regardless, as an initial step toward laying a solid technology foundation, look for these things pertaining to platform technologies: • Whether public or private platforms offer the necessary security measures for your industry specifications • The flexibility or structure of the environment and ability to handle specified data volumes • Ensure the technology partner is recommended by organizations you trust 8
  9. 9. A NEW YEAR FOR NEW IT STRATEGIES The 3rd Platform is where data initiatives will thrive or die. Now isn’t the time to be overwhelmed by new technologies and data. With IT’s evolving roles and responsibilities, it’s essential that IT becomes the expert in the 3rd Platform and learns how to leverage the platform that will best foster data and mobility initiatives. Learn how to create a sound technology and digital strategy with the best tools for your unique initiatives. 9
