Old Mission Montessori School Newsletter 4-29-2014

  1. 1. Principal Notes… HAPPY EASTER, we hope every family had a joyous celebration and treasured their time together! Remember we are still celebrating the EASTER Season! OMMS Technology Initiative Recently our Pastor, Father David, and Chief Operating Officer, Kathleen Flanagan, announced two truly wonderful gifts to our Parish School. The first is an anonymous donation to assist students/families in continuing at Old Mission Montessori School next year. Families are asked to submit their completed registration form on or before Wednesday, April 30. If the completed registration including the registration fee is received on or before Wednesday, April 30, each registered student’s tuition will be credited $100, but only as funds will allow. Once the funds from this generous gift are depleted, the $100 credit will not be available so register early. The second anonymous gift comes in the form of a matching grant for our school’s Technology Initiative. OMMS is in the process of installing smart boards, projectors and laptops in each classroom with the goal of having these operational at the beginning of the school year. Smart Boards allow teachers to deliver dynamic lessons, write notes in digital ink and save their work – all with the touch of a finger. This technology encourages student interaction and captures the attention of learners as teachers pull multimedia resources and the internet into their presentation of our curriculum. We are also in the process of a much needed update of our Technology Labs and classroom computer equipment. Our anonymous donor has offered to match up to $8,000.00 in funds we raise for technology. If you’d like to help us take advantage of this matching grant by donating to the school, please go to www.sanluisreyparish.org and click on the PARISH OFFICE tab. Choose ONLINE GIVING. Under “fund” choose “Contributions/Donations to School.” In the memo area, write “Technology” and your contribution will go toward this special matching grant. You can also drop a check by the school during office hours or place St. Catherine of Siena (1347 – 1380) Catherine of Siena could barely read, but by the time she died she had written 400 letters and a book. She has been honored with the title “doctor (teacher) of the church.” Catherine of Siena was the 23rd child in her family. In those times, girls were told by their parents whom they would marry and where they would live. But Catherine convinced her parents that she must not marry. She willingly took on the duties of a maid within her own home. She became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. While still living at home, she prayed, cared for the sick and visited people in prisons. Although she was young, she developed a reputation for being wise. Priests, politicians, and nobles came to her for guidance. She called them all her family and built them into a group of spiritual and social workers who influenced the whole region. Italy was loaded with quarreling families. The church itself was badly divided. More than one person claimed to be pope. Catherine and her spiritual companions worked to restore peace. Catherine spent two years in Rome working to make peace in the church. The stressful situation affected her health. She suffered two strokes and died. Catherine’s deepest love was for reflective prayer. Yet she also achieved much good in the world. In her brief lifetime of 33 years, she counseled popes, healed divisions within her country, and shaped the church of time. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us.
