    • W C A A ? In the past few weeks, many parishioners have been si ng down over coffee with the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure in their hands, talking together about the Church and money. It’s an important conversa on. The impact of the Annual Catholic Appeal is felt even on the day-to-day opera ons of the Church, in parishes, the diocese and beyond. One parishioner asked very honestly, what happens if parishes in the diocese don’t meet the goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal? First of all, the diocese won’t be able to sustain essenal and vital services. Administra ve fees for programs for Youth and Catechists could see increases. Parishes and schools won’t have access to much needed bridge loans for emergencies or for new building. All programs and ministries funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal will have to cut services. Individual parishes like ours would quickly feel the change. Fewer seniors and low income families would receive help from the emergency food pantries funded by Catholic Chari es. There would be fewer programs for Youth and Young Adults. Fewer seminarians would be in forma on. The list goes on and on. Another parishioner asked, how much should I be giving my parish and the diocese? The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have published a number of documents on Chris an stewardship. The concept of giving gi s of me, talent and treasure back in gra tude for the Lord’s blessings in our lives are requested of each and every Catholic. Stewardship is what we do a er we say, “I believe, Lord.” The Bishop’s recommended guidelines for giving are simple: sacramental giving means 10% of your income goes back to the Lord. 5% to your local parish, 1% to the diocese (Annual Catholic Appeal) and remaining 4% to other chari es of your choice. To those who’ve already pledged, I offer you my gra tude and my prayers. Some have been very generous to the appeal and I thank you. For those of you who are thinking about it, I invite you to help us meet the needs of the greater Catholic Church by mee ng our ACA goal. Even a modest gi will help. With thanksgiving for all you do, Fr. • As we prepare for the Season of Lent, please keep the following in mind: LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Fas ng (the ea ng of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in between snacks) applies to those between ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fas ng. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abs nence (the exclusion of meat for the en re day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to one’s health. The days of full Abs nence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a me for us to voluntarily choose to do penance and mor fica on as an expression of gra tude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an a empt to respond to the love that He so willingly gave to us.
